Hi,
I posted this on the HP2 forum but the clutch is the same to both bikes so I will post here too if you don't mind: more readers.

I'm about to replace my clutch.
Is only 32,000km but I abused it in deep sand and mud thru Sudan and Uganda.

I bought a ceramic clutch from Sachs Engineering (via Touratech).

My question, mainly for those who do their own maintenance: has anyone else reading this post replaced a GS/HP2 clutch?
The GS1200 clutch, is the same parts, altho a MUCH easier job.

On the HP2 it's a fairly big job: need to dismantle a LOT to get at it.

The BMW dealer says it takes about 6-8 manhours, altho BMW's official time is 3 hours.
But now BMW says charge the actual time after complaints from dealers (they have to charge the BMW rates on a set job and were losing on only 3 hours).
I dread to think my time to do it.

My question is, has anyone replaced JUST the Clutch Plate (21217697737) or also the Pressure Cover, Housing Cover and Clutch Housing?
I mean replaced as a matter of course: not due to damage.

I wasn't planning on doing it, I figured only my clutch plate is worn (I haven't stripped it yet).
But the guys at the dealer (friendly guys, even tho I don't use their workshop) say they normally replace it all.
Is a lot more cost-wise: £600 vs £300.

Their reasoning is once you have it stripped might as well do the whole hog.
But from my experience with the R80GS and cars, the pressure plate and housings are usually fine.

But it IS a big job and I'd HATE to do it and then find it's not right after all that just due to trying to save the £300.
However it DOES seem a bit excessive.
MAYBE the pressure plate fingers can get worn/bent, but the rest???

The guys here have no stock so have to order in so takes a few days.
And then because they ordered it I cannot return it.
So I cannot get a set just in case then return it.

I'm hoping to have on hand so I can replace it same day.
Obviously if it IS damaged I WILL replace whatever.
Assuming the damage is obvious (maybe not so obvious on the pressure plate fingers).

Anyways, any idea?

Thanks,
Alan

I'd be happy to strip and inspect, then replace parts as required. Dealer will alway replace every thing, it@s how they make money.

Replace the complete unit.
If your clutch is slipping it means the cover plate and pressure plate will have got extremely hot and be fecked.
You'll soon find out if you don't replace them and have to do the job again in the not to distant future.

If the job only took 30 minutes, as it does on an airhead then take a chance.
But as you state, it's a far bigger job on the 1200 models.

I will only fit a complete clutch unit on 1200 models (and 1100/1150 come to that), if a customer only wants me to fit a friction plate i tell them i won't guarantee if it slips within a few thousand miles.

Makes no difference to my earnings if i fit a complete clutch or a friction plate, i charge the customer only for the work i do, the customer pays what i pay for the parts or he can supply his own.

And for the reasons stated above - you'll be a fool to only replace the friction plate.

Steptoe speaks with wisdom yet again.

Do it once.

Do it right.
