Getting my 1989 100GS onto the centre stand is a proper pain ... in fact I find it practically impossible, :rob.
I have noticed that when on the centre stand, the rear wheel is over 2" from the ground, which seems a tad excessive.
Is this clearance the norm? is it the wrong centre stand fitted? is there another stand that I can fit?, slightly lower.
Got all the theory on popping the bike on the centre stand, just lacking the superhuman strength :weights
Gotta sort this before I cop a hernia or something similar, any suggestions ?:duno

Are you placing your foot on the main loop not the side protrusion?

Not sure what above picture from 2gses gives us, but here's my take. I too find it a challenge to put the R100GS (PD in my case) on the centre stand, but I don't have the 2" gap you do - much less. It conjures the question, "do you have shortened suspension?" Ot maybe the wrong tyres? Just thoughts.....

I bought a bolt-on handle for my GS. Made life much easier. (And it was about twenty quid on eBay, not ninety at nippy’s)

Not a gs but my ktm 1090 Adventure S, (19" front and 17" rear wheel) when I fitted an uprated rear shock it was slightly longer and the rear tyre was touching the ground so I got a KTM 1090 R model centre stand designed for the bike with a 21" front and 18" rear wheel.
Although the stand was only 1 1/2" inches longer it was nigh on impossible (2 man job) to get the bike on the centre stand and once on the bike was nose down and there was over 2" of air beneath the rear tyre .
I ended up altering the original stand and added 20mm to it , in doing so I got the required clearance on the rear wheel and the bike could be put on the stand (albeit not as easily as on the standard length centre stand )

Is it your technique that’s lacking?
All your weight needs to be pushing down on the centre stand, and then arm to aid lift?

2 inch gap from tyre to floor does seem excessive though…maybe you have lowered rear suspension, and that would make it a bear to put onto the centrestand.

Good thinking.. I don’t know if the rear shock is original or original length, it’s a Hagen.
Pretty standard tyres I think IMG_5295.jpegIMG_5291.jpegIMG_5298.jpeg

Now that sounds interesting, the built-in handle on the bike is awkward to say the least … I’ll take a look on eBay later .. thanks 👍👍

👍 I was wondering if a stand from a ‘road’ bike would fit 😬

I might have a stand from a 100r
I’ll try and remember to take a look next week
I had an R100R rear shock on my 92 GS temporarily , it became almost impossible to get onto the centre stand as a result.
Sounds like op has non standard suspension if rear tyre is that high off the ground

Sounds about right … 👍
I will give the smaller centre stand a try, if Mikey can find one, (and if he thinks it would be a straight swap) 👍

Check the ID sticker on the Hagon - M60001 is the right number for the R100GS and if it has -30 or -50 after it, that's your seat height reduction (and would relate to the 2" gap you have).

M60001 on the shock .. I was half hoping it was the wrong shock… thanks mate (great knowledge👍)

I do have a r100 r stand,
However,it’s considerably shorter than a gs one ,probably too short.
I’ve two GS paras in the workshop and both of them have @ 2” under the rear wheel when on the main stand.
Thanks for looking Mikey… I will try a aftermarket handle, as per SBD, if I still can’t get it up 😜 I’ll leave it on the side stand 😁👍👍

I had an R100PD and it was an absolute pig to get on the centre stand. (Had probably 50 bikes over the years without problem, so it's not technique and I'm not too weedy either).

I bought a replacement stand... which did not resolve it. I then realised that the issue was wear in the holes the stand fits into. Just thought I'd mention that in case it's similar for you.

I have recently bought a 1993 R80GS and it is the easiest centre stand to use compared to the 3 previous airheads I have owned.

I don’t know if the changed design on the later stand with the near side matching the curve of the off side is the reason for this.

I had no significant problems with the 1992 R100R but standing on GS stand it lifts much easier.

The worst centre stand was on my 1981 R80G/S because bottom of the stand legs were worn to holes though wear and rust! Also, the bushes and the frame holes had become oval as The Other PaulG found.

New bushes and a strengthened stand made a big difference but it still felt that it was poorly designed / manufactured as the two base tubes did not sit level on the ground.

My 1993 GSPD came with a non standard length shock making it a pig to get on to the stand. To overcome this problem I had to keep a piece of wood about 1 inch thick with me to pull the bike on to and this worked and it didn’t matter if I placed it for the front or rear wheel.

Good luck getting it sorted.

Gerry
