GS GDSA TFT Display

I must be weird I've just come back from my bonny Scotia travels. My world with biking is the riding experience not looking at led displays maybe it's my age but I've always felt content with what I've got. I remember once watching these Russkies cycling down from Zip tyres in Peterhead to their boat with two old car tyres on each arm with a happy look on their faces. Free old worn tyres to take home to flog must make their world go round, bless em.
Contentment must mean different things to all of us.

+1

Yes the new dash looks good, is it the reason to lust after a new motorcycle IMO no.

Ironically the IMO on my airhead is currently outoff action so I have no dash and I can 100% confirm the event of riding that bike is as good as ever :D

A display for the iPad generation. I don't care for it and much prefer bike clocks to be analogue with needles sweeping across a dial face.

Should be better than the analogue clocks on my 2014 gsa , the one with the light grey band around the clocks and extremely shiny glass fronts making the mph figures barely readable in daylight and the kmph figures utterly impossible to read

Maybe I'm getting to be a bit of a Luddite but I really like the idea of a needle spinning round on a rev counter. It's nice to have all that extra information, and it will be the standard in the future, but for now I still like glancing at that needle sweeping around the dash.

It does look great though, and I can't fault anyone for wanting it :)

One other thing, given the theft of GS clocks, have they secured this differently I wonder, or is it a strip of velcro and a circlip :)

I like the look of the new dash panel but there is no way I'm going to change my '17 Rallye plus buy a new BMW helmet and comms set to get what I can't get on my Sat Nav in the cradle and the current dash with my Shoei with Sena connected Bluetooth i.e. I think it's only phone calls out (no big deal for me).....correct me if I've overlooked some wonderful function I didn't know I needed.

I'm wondering if this TFT unit can be retrofitted to older bikes, ie 2015 GSA...... does anyone know?
Highly doubt it since it needs to talk to all the other systems on the bike.

Other than being shown the dash and BMW helmet side by side is there other evidence you must have the helmet? It's the same Bosch system as KTM and there is no such requirement. Is this just another example of BMW fleecing it's flock?

1290 KTM boys are sorting the software out for you right now.

Why do all these things look like Steve Jobs trying to sell the the greatest we have ever made!

Exactly my thought. It's very dull. Especially when American OTT yelling and applause are involved for every detail. 'Look, here's the ON switch'

Agreed. This'll be a massive upgrade IMO. Will I pay more to have it on the bike? I doubt it costs that much more to make, but sure BMW will have an angle. Best wait until November or December when sales are struggling and get it included. I reckon a GS Adventure in Rallye colours with this dash, Hiltop map, swap all the bits over, that would be nice.

In the presentation (there's a link to YouTube somewhere in one of these forks threads) they say it interfaces with the BMW Communications System and don't mention compatibility with anything else, see: https://www.bmw-motorrad.co.uk/en/w...n-and-communication/communication-system.html The GS with TFT is not yet on the list of bikes on this web page for which this is required/recommended but I guess it will be added.

Elsewhere I found some information that suggests that this is needed for "full" integration with the other bikes in the range which have the ability to talk to a headset, which suggests that some functionality might be available with any BlueTooth headset that will pair with the display but I don't suppose BMW are going to publish a list of compatible third party units.

If it doesn't link to an iPhone someone at BMW needs to find a new line of work. My view.

What's the point?
On a bike I want nothing but my own thoughts in my head. I get bombarded with never ending mither at work.

I was only talking about the headset issue. To get the basic navigation features, incoming and outgoing calls, etc, you need to link the display to a smartphone running the associated BMW app, and I'm pretty sure this is available for iPhone and Android. The TFT doesn't seem to have much capability other than as display device - its gets all its smarts from the phone, which means if you want to use those features you need to find somewhere to stash a phone and if you want to use it for extended periods you will have to connect the phone to a USB power supply. Add a Nav V or VI into the equation if you want more sophisticated navigation features, and you end up with quite a complex solution, including having to switch the multi-controller between controlling the display and controlling the Nav as needed.

Personally I don't really want music, phone calls, or other such distractions - just a decent sized speed readout that I can switch between mph and km/h, and a satnav for when I want to use one, particularly for pre-planned routes, which it looks like you need the separate Navigator device for anyway, as the basic satnav provided by the smartphone app and TFT display combo is unlikely to provide this facility.

Depending on navigation app, phone based navigation can be some of the best there is. I believe sigic is listed as compatible which has everything, live traffic, the works. Will it look as pretty? No but it will get you there via what ever route you want.

It sounds like a similar system to lots of the newer cars where the phone app is mirrored to the screen
