GS/GSA LC owner spot needed - North London or nearby

Hi, feeling it for anyone with a problem with their bike...

I moved from an 11 plate GSA to a September regd GS WC, first I struggled occasionally with getting neutral, dealer fitted new push rod at first service, don't think it made an immediate difference, but after maybe 1500 miles no more sticky problems..
Now me as opposed to most on here, with my GSA I found lots of neutrals, it jumped in & out of gear, frightened the shit out of me, (more than once) that was till someone on here advised me to be more positive with my feet & gear changes, then no more problems, it was defo rider error.. (I'm not saying yours is, but mine WAS) & I had previously came off a F800Gs so I thought I knew BMWs
Now, this new bike, the WC GS, nav 5 saying 38,000+ gear changes! & not one missed gear, in fact slick I would say, requiring less effort on my part & much more care free attitude to gear changes.. Yes it clunks a tad into first gear at traffic lights, but I accept that as most wet clutch bikes I've had do the same (or worse)
One thing to check is the gear lever height adjustment, if it's too high your ankle may not have enough upward travel to engage gear properly, simple thing really but worth checking..
Also I agree with Todmeister & Nice n Fat to ride a demo bike to compare gearbox operation, but seriously have a look at lever adjustment..
Good luck & keep us informed..

Thanks for info! My bike is August 2013 build and registered in September. What you wrote about your 2013 LC is exactly what I'm experiencing with my bike. I will ring up few dealers ( excluding one in central london) and my existing one, in chance to get test ride on either new GS or GSA! Closest to me are NOG and 2 south from London.

I would let you ride mine, but it's being traded in at the end of next week against a new GSA, so I'd rather not risk it. I'm happy to ride yours though, and give you my feedback.:thumb

If you are available tomorrow I could ride to your place and maybe we could go for test ride to nearby dealer. PM me if you are up for a ride ;)

Mines manufactured in feb 2014 , 3rd recent new bmw and the issue is that , 2nd and 3rd upshift when giving it the beans almost doesnt want to engage, is graunchy as fuck , with some nasty kick back through the lever if not firm with the push.

The dealer takes it out and they trundle round the block 'we cant break speed limits'. They are never gonna find a problem.

In all other circumstances the gear-change is fine and i have found that by pre loading the lever when caning it, the shift is much, much better with no graunch, so i can ride around the issue now but its the first bike in 20 odd years ive had to consciously make an effort to change gear in a certain way.

Need to work out what im going to do about it, it sounds horrendous like the gearbox is eating itself.

Ride slower then, you bloody maniac :rob:D

I have all above. 1-2-3-2-1 - these are problematic. I can't complain about higher gear shifts. Thing is that gear changes are not consistent, they are not all noisy and requiring preload, which makes me believe that there is problem with it and not just my imagination. Most of down shifts I do now with blip on the throttle ( I've never done it before GS...) and it helps in most of the cases to get smooth shift down, but you get noisy ones too.

Hi, I can understand what your saying about the dodgy shifts unfortunately I don't get my new gsa till next month so can only compare to my current 1150 gsa mine comes down to the boots I'm wearing beleve or not I have two pairs of alpinestars one pair road type mx4's the others are full on crosser style alpines in he road boots which are comfy as slippers I miss 2 nd quite often and sometimes other gears in the crosser boots never miss a shift I think the larger toe area makes the difference on really nicking it in to gear were as the thinner road type boot needs that extra ankle movement to ensure its actually gonna change, I always blip on the down changes I find it smoothens it all out a bit old track bike habit but the old girl seems to react better to it, I'd say if it's your 1st gs change your style to suit it rather than expecting it to feel Japanese I thought mine was shagged when I first got it but now I wouldn't go back to Jap if it was free stick with the gs what ever model their cool as penguins piss :-)

Bugger your gear box. You appear to be missing the 'full stop' button on your keyboard.

I had Jap as my first bike...then swapped it to S1kRR and moved to GS. I rode RT1200 LC (when got loaner while bike had first clutch replaced) and I don't recall any problems with gear shifts. I actually believe now that new clutch, pushrod, master cylinder made it worse than it was before. On last 2 ocassions I was riding F800s and these bikes were silky smooth!

I live in Hampshire so if you are ever down this way I would be happy to let you take mine for a comparison.

good on ya. Please report back.

I had a go on new GSA with 2300 miles and compared to mine it was spot on! The clunk to first gear was subtle and gear went in with no resistance or grinding. When shifting 1-2-3 and down you hear the clicks rather than clunks and they don't sound wrong in mechanical way(hard to describe it). It is definately noisier than F800GT or F800GSA I was riding recently but although noisier it wasn't disturbing me from having good fun!

I did a quick test and tried to get into first by gently pressing gear leaver and at some point gear just engages without grinding (like on mine). It does make noise but it is far better than on my bike. Thanks everyone who suggested taking demo on other bike and big thanks to Nutty for organising spot with me in Guildford. It was good day after all.

Have you joined UKIP Wapping?

Even they frown on that kind of language

It was like a bag of spanners in a washing machine!:P

It wasn't that bad really, but was far from perfect. Another rejection coming BMW's way.:augie
