Im not sure how the canbus components are wired. Is there a normal 12v 2 wired feed to the horn from the box of tricks? It's the best bike horn I've had and i'd like to fit one on my Triumph.

Likely can bus connections innit, doubt there'd be old skool stuff on the LC anywhere.
I hate the horn (double) on my car (2016 CRV) but have hesitated in changing due to dual canbus. (and one of them is well hidden too)
I CAN recommend the GL1800 Goldwing horn though, which doesn't have canbus and will probably fit direct to your Triumph.
Seriously, check it out before you buy an LC horn for the Triumph - I've got both and the GL1800 is VERY effective!

Electricity is electricity and a horn is a horn.

All you'll need to watch out for is if your third party horn draws more than the existing BMW horn and as an consequence (maybe) causes the canbus 'fuse' to trip. If it does, fit a relay.

I powered my air horn from the battery through a relay switched by the original BMW beeper. The canbus doesn't seem to notice the relay!

Works fine.

Sorry if I read it wrong, but I thought the OP was asking if the GS LC horn had an old skool 12v connection system so's he could fit it to his non canbus triumh?
Don't think Crotch is looking to upgrade his LC horn 'cos he thinks it's great.... so great he wants to fit one on his Triumph ......
or am I :loopy

^^ Correct :D

I wasn't sure what the setup was. Is it the 3 wire canbus thing between controls and ECU, then the ecu sends a good old 12v power to the horn. Or is the horn on the canbus loop?

On my 2014 GS LC,
The horn is a 2 wire 12V job.

I replaced the horn with a 12V relay that triggered the new horn. As the relay worked and did not bounce the connections I believe that the supply to the horn is a steady 12V.

So you should be able put it on your Trimuph.

How ridiculous! If you expect it to be louder (and why else would you be changing it ) then it will draw more current !

I have a Stebel magnum 136db low tone horn on my bike. It fits in the original position, i used a connector from nippy normans to plug in to the standard harness. Works no probs and a lot louder!

I have fitted a Stebel Magnum and the connector from Nippy's, to the original harness, however It trips the Canbus if I press for more than a few seconds.
Any advice would be appreciated.

John

If the new horn is cutting out after a few seconds, this is because it takes more current than the Canbus system allows, so it trips its internal fuse. When you switch the horn off the fuse resents.
The only way around is to use the horn supply lead to activate a relay, then the relay can operate your new horn.

If you have both horn still connected remove the original horn.

Hi SMB,
I have removed the original horn but used the existing wiring together with the Nippy's connector that gives spade fittings to connect the Stebel.
Do you think that I need a relay. (what type/size)

John

Yes, any 12V automotive relay will sort it out, either from Halfords or Maplin.
The Nippy lead can be used to trigger the relay.
Take a fused +12V supply from the battery to the relay, then the switched relay wire to the horn. The negative wire goes from the battery to the negative of the horn.
So the new horn would be taken out of the Canbus system.
If you were nearer I would do it for you, but Devon is too far away.

If I can be of any further help, contact me at

Great stuff, thanks for the advice SMB......................................I think I should be able to sort it now.
Many thanks,
John

Thanks SMB, I'll keep an eye on eBay for a second hand GS LC Horn. Its for a Triumph Scrambler.

Mine doesn't. Its the most effective bike horn i've had in traffic.

The only reason I know about the horn is that I was disappointed with the standard one on my LC.
I would suggest that you find some one else (dealer?) with a LC and test it to see if you are happy with it. You may have the best BM horn in the country on your LC.
