Just been offered a reasonable deal for an older 1150gs against a loaded 2002 adventurer - is there any pitfalls with an 'upgrade' to this model ?

i will need the bags to fit in the Aluminium cases + a decent exhaust as the Adv is standard - apart from that it looks the business....

you guys thoughts would be appreciated. :clap

adv V GS

I think you're right - the black is stunning - afraid not too many up North where I frequent though so silver it may have to be - anything to look out for apart from usual history & corrosion area's ?? :mmmm :mmmm

I think 2002 Advs had the big (30ltr) tank as an option - you may need to check if its the small or large one fitted to the bike you're looking at.

Oh, and silver ones are by far and away the fastest ones. :thumb

adv or gs

It has a 31 ? ltr tank - def bigger than my 1150 gs - it looks huge !!;)

usual pitfalls

you will be familiar with the crap lights and awful standard rear suspension already and so I would have to say go for the adv as they are the bizz

watch out for the height difference
if you regularly take a pillion then take them for a spin as the adv seat is nowhere near as good as the gs (apparently)
try mane event for the bags , £91 delivered or wait a week or so and I'll post on how good/bad they are
if it's too tall then it's easy to lower to standard gs
stick on a y piece and a k&n filter, don't bother with the tail piece

I think thats it

My forth GS

Is an Adventure............And it's the best GS I've had. Better top gear ratio for all the normal roads we love riding, just a bit short for long m/way trips, so if you do many of those may not be the best for you.

Otherwise it's just absolutely superb. Yes it needs aux lights to see at night, but all the 1150's do. I personally wouldn't bother with the aftermarket can, the Y piece & K&N smooth it out & make it just rorty enough for me - when I had the Remus Revolution can on it drove me mad on long rides, even with good ear plugs in - also the seat of the pants dyno certainly suggested better mid range & pickup with standard can in place.

If you can afford it aftermarket shocks really improve the handling over the o/e Showa's - I'm running Ohlins but apparently Wilbers are also very good.

Enjoy:thumb

Deinitely the adv, had mine since November having swapped from a sports bike as I am doing a lot of european touring now. 250 mile tank range easily, comfortable but I agree with the other comment the rear seat is not as confortable as the gs. Mine has the lower seat height and at 6 foot is ideal for me. I have the y piece and remus revolution and it is a bit noisy but i will live with it until it wears as i have the original brand new one in the attic. Yes i have extra lights as the originals are bad. Main thing I notice with the adventure is its ability to hoover up all the mud and crud off the road surface and deposit it on every single square inch of bike, even under the seat. buy and enjoy

The rear seat on the Adventure is not as large as the std GS. Check it out if two up touring is your thing. Oh and the extra height.

In my opinion the low sports top gear is better.

Colin.

i did 2500 miles over the new year with a remus pipe and i loved the sound.
each to his own:thumb

I have a Black (fastest) ADV with low seat, big tank, black engine & Remus + Y piece. Wouldn't have it any other way. This is my first GS so cannot comment on comparison but I know I'm not dissapointed. Riding around with Chad on his standard GS (also black) we've established that at the same speed, the ADV rev's around 500rpm more than the standard one.

Don't forget to ask for racing air in the tyres!!!:augie
