Having just purchased my first ever BMW, a 2018 R1200 GS TE, I forgot in the excitement to ask the dealer (Arden Motorrad in Tunbridge Wells) how much would the average cost of a service be. I've tried emailing (twice) and have been ignored, so I searched this forum and cannot find any answers newer than 2013. It has 15,000 miles on it, and the next service is due in November, so I'm guessing that this time it will be an interim, and next year a valve clearance. It would be nice to know roughly how much it is likely to be. Can anyone help, please?

I hope so - I have been singularly unimpressed with Ardens. When I did the deal I asked that they fit a USB socket for me, and source a cable to go from the Hella socket to SAE for my Optimate. They forgot both, and also forgot to MOT the bike before I picked it up. What with ignoring my two emails it does not give me any confidence in them. The manager sent me a £100 voucher to spend there in compensation, but I'd feel more comfortable with a decent independent, to be honest.

I would use Brian Giles based in pembury, a very very good independent. I think an interim 18k service should be about £250 at a main dealer if nothing extra comes up.

As I understand you are looking between £200 - £250 for the oil and filter service. And £500 for the valve adjustment service.

An oil service at a BMW dealer is Circa £200. The big service is circa £400 - but this will vary on how many valves need adjusting.

BTW these prices also include removing the engine bars, which they charge time/labour rates for.

Fitting USB power socket is easy, if using the Nippy Normans plug and play adapter;

If you’re half way competent with a spanner they are extremely easy to service yourself for the basics

Oil, filter, air filter, plugs, final drive oil. That will save you a fair bit of cash

The valve check is about 70 euros from memory and a brake bleed is not much more I don’t think, I generally got these done by the dealer

Once they’re out of warranty they’re actually fairly cheap to maintain

Last year's service on my R1250GS Adventure was about £180. I can't remember where I've hidden the invoice, but I guess that was the basic service. This year's is due, I suppose it'll be more expensive.

I've bookmarked Brian Giles' website and will contact him when the time comes.

All good advice - thank you all. As for whether I'm good with spanners, that's a definite 'no' - spanners are not my friend.

I'm not sure how relevant it is but my 2013 TC 1200 GSA is serviced at main dealers every year. I had the 'big' service last year, cost £480, oil and filter only this year is £159.

I have a 2019 GSA just about to go through its 12 miles (big service)

I have been quoted £580 but I did want a couple of extras things to be done

down south is more expensive but i pay £160-180 for interim and £350 for full

IIRC the valve clearances are done on milage, not time so due next at 24k, assuming they were checked/done at 12k. I've never kept mine long enough to have the 12k major service done but usually pay around 200 for the standard one plus there's brake fluid ever 2 years too and FD oil to consider depending on when it was last done

Agree with the above thoughts to do the basic fluid changes yourself as a minimum, then get other stuff done at a good independant. If you intend to keep the bike and have it serviced at BMW dealer, the service package could be worthwhile. Three scheduled services £790 or five services £1350. Bikes up to 10 years old are eligible, but not sure if it needs full BMW history or if the dealer needs to do a health check / inspection before the bike is passed as fit enough to be eligible.

I really don't want to give the business to the main dealer. As I said, I have no confidence in them & I will get the recommended independent to look after it for me. I will need to keep the service record up in order to keep the 2 year warranty valid.

My bike is a 9 year old RS12, but the story remains the same.

Saw the inside of a dealer last month for the first time since it's second service in 2016. Received a new free drive shaft.

All the basic servicing for 45,000 miles has been done by me. It's easy. And cheap.

My regular MOT man fits my new tyres to loose wheels and changes my brake fluid occasionally.

First valve check was done by an independent in March this year - no adjustment needed.

Custom suspension was fitted at 10,000 miles and hasn't been touched.

I dislike car and bike dealers and can't stand the drag to get to them when necessary.

Must have saved a fortune. That has been spent on hotels and fuel.

Each to their own.

Couldn't of said it any better..
Nail on head..👍

In the North-East our local independent lad (Mick Kendrick) charges about £170 for a minor and £280 for a major service. As has been pointed out, you may end up paying more in The South, but there’s probably a decent independant dealer near you. I bought my bike from Vertu Sunderland but I’d never consider getting it serviced by them as they basically charge double what Mick does.
