anyone know what setting the rear shock is set at upon leaving the factory - i am referring to the 2004 model adventure - i am 13.5 stone mostly solo road use though with black bmw panniers attached

my '02 adv had the pre-load set to about 1/3 of maximum, which was just pants. The damping was also set to about 3 half-turns from base. I am 16 stone and had mine set to 3/4 max and 5 half turns form base. Feedback on here tends to suggest that the suspension is generally soft and needs beefing up.

Now i have an olhins rear, which has made a dramatic change to the feel. Wait until the [crap] Showa shock is wasted before considering changing mind.

thanks for that - i understand that the 2004 adventure has a white power rear shock - i assume this is better than the showa unit which you say is crap

zues,

didn't know that the 04 model uses WP. If it does, then I would consider that a big improvement. It is generally - and i do mean generally - accepted that the Showa shock is not the greatest, but i wouldn't go out and bloww 500 smackers on a replacement until it needed it. The dealerships will sell you a new Showa for that much - why bother, when we can get a lovely Ohlins for less??

My 04 Adv came with Showa at both ends!

Not sure how the WP shock rumour got started - lots of people seem to think that the Adv has them fitted as standard. Standard fit is a Showa - if you have a WP shock, it's because someone has fitted it as an after market part...

Mike:)

after all, it is extremely unlikely that the owners of BMW's big rivals - KTM - would allow thier own subsidiary, WP's products to be used as standard kit on any Beemer.

The politics of Austria v Germany.

Hmmm.....

rugbug - this is from balderstins web page
Optimised spring travel and suspension settings
Whether on gravel paths, sand tracks, rough terrain or over long distances, the chassis of the R1150 GS Adventure ensures optimum comfort and control even when fully loaded. Spring travel has been increased by 20 mm to 210 mm at the front and 220 mm at the rear. Easy spring pre-load adjustment to the front can be made by a supplied spanner and to the rear by a hydraulic adjuster. Rebound damping at the rear can be adjusted by means of a small screw. For the first time in a BMW motorcycle, a shock is used at the rear which has suspension deflection related damping, whereby the greater the spring deflection, the greater the damping effect. The WP shock is characterised by sensitive response and a high degree of knock resistance

wp shock

well my 04 adv has a wp as standard. The black faster ones may just have had better bits .

No matter how unlikely, I think you'll find that is what's fitted as OE equipment to the 1200.
