GS Reliability Kit

was the same answer as somebody elses who didnt get the delete button, be a good chap,:augie take it your a 1200 owner(ps, that was a joke )

Maybe the mod's have got it in for you :D They probably didn't get to his post in time to mod it before i replied, and decided to leave it.

TBH i'd consider buying an 11**, mainly because then i wouldn't have to see a page full of threads saying "oh dear god my mechanically propelled transport has failed (again, for the first time, is this a known fault?, anyone else had this problem?, is it only me? - (delete as appropriate)):tears" I'm begining to see Tarkas point of view .

Yes i have a 1200, it has, and probably will again, broke down, but i'll just fix it and continue to abuse it.:D

Off for a lie down now.

Anyone know the part number for the fuel pump relay 'thingy'
(marcus, you'll lose us all with these technical terms :D)
and the latest incarnation of the ring antenna?

....and before anyone says it, yes I could just ask a dealer. Happen to be at the computer and just thought someone might know before I make the call? :nenau

Finally decided to buy a ring antanea and pump relay at the weekend to carry on the bike.

Cost: ONE HNDRED AND FIFTY pounds :( Feck these MWB's are exspensive

Andres

Edit: Interestingly the service manager reckond the ring antenea nearly always fails within the first couple of thousand miles, he reckoned if it ain't gone by then it aint gonna go - I still got one though, just in case......................

Outtomunch, you don't happen to have the part numbers of those parts do you?

:topic Tell that to the owners of the CX500 (camchain) and VF750/VF500 (camshaft) plus all other makes have also had their moments.

Some BMW owners have had some problems (some quite horrific) with the 1200GS but its sales have been phenomenal worldwide, if the GS and Adv had been classified as one model it would have come top of the large capacity bike sales month on month in the UK and Europe (quote BIKE mag).

With all that volume, the same percentage error in manufacture, will produce more numbers of bikes with problems, and we have threads for those problems to be aired.

Sadly this thread is one is for us plebs who know 1200GS' to help someone with advise on kit to carry to keep them going, not advise on changing their bike. :topic

Jumps off hobby horse.

Problems when touring:

Punctures - when was the last time you had a puncture in your bike tyre, for me it was 1983!. Tibeless now so no more blow outs, mostly just a slow loss of air.

Mechanical failure - been lucky and never had one, just check the oil daily.

Electrical failure - shorts in wires over frames, blown bulbs

Vibration failure - due to bolts working loose, screws vibrating out, leaving exhaust, headlamps and indicator lenses, plus sidepanels to fall off and skid down the road behind you

Leaking fuel lines - prolonged hot engine softens lines and fuel line start to leak.

Chain breaking - bear with me there is a point to all this:bounce1

These were the problems we used to have when touring and they have all pretty much gone away, the fuel pump relay is two torx screws to change and the ring antennae needs a zip tie or tape to fix in place temporarily.

On a modern bike like the 1200Gs you can pretty much kick the tyres and go, if you've had the bike a while, take a fuel relay, if its newer you might suffer a ring ant failure, but otherwise I'd be more concerned about how you are going to get the flies off your teeth, due to the huge smile you'll have purring around the highways and byways :beerjug:

Fantastic, thanks for that. Just one thing...........for the hard of thinking, which bit is the fuel pump relay?? :nenau

Sounds to me like it's be a whole lot more straight forward to phone a dealer and say "please may I have a fuel pump controller for a R1200GS" - worked for me :thumb

Thanks everyone useful information. I think its time to close it before Digger does himself an injury.

Just to reiterate a small but important point, the whole idea of the "small get me home kit" is in relation to Malaysia. Not the UK or Europe. Land area bigger than UK, BMW dealer ONE, no assist. Circumstances are different.
