Have just acquired an almost new TE (touring version) of the new LC GS and its likely I'll want to use my Garmin 550 for a while, partly to ease the pain of acquisition and partly cos its taken me so long to get used to the nooks and crannies of the 550 I'm not anxious to start afresh with a new model. The TE comes fitted with a base connector for the Navigator which is (I think) the 660 by another name and I will need to remove that to fit the base connector for the 550. The means of power connection for the latter is fiddly but clear. The connection for the Navigator is concealed and I'm not sure how to get at it. I'm assuming I can disconnect and then tape the cable out of the way till needed while I fit a hard wired connection from the battery to the unit. Does anyone know how I get at the existing cable connection?

Using the 2nd plug recommend here you can connect your 550 directly to the plug used by the TE mounting. There is a 2nd plug you won't need, both plugs are on the right hand side just follow the wiring. It's quite an easy job, I am using my 550 on my TE!

Thanks Rattler but not what I was getting at. I need to disconnect the existing cable connector to the factory fitted Navigator base unit and was afraid of tinkering without knowing what might happen

The 550 won't fit the mount on the TE you need to remove it and the existing wiring.

Thanks Dave. Did you remove the whole thing? i.e the Nav unit and the cable? Presumably you just unplugged the 660 socket and removed it with the cable and unit and replaced it with the 550 cable and plugged it in to the Canbus one end and the base unit at the other end? Have to say the 550 looks nice and familiar on the bike!

Yes the whole thing, I had to buy a new adaptor to fit the rail for the 550 mount to fit which I got from eBay as I had it on a K1300r before though. There are threads about it in this section if you do a search. Good luck. I will keep using my 550 until I change my GS next time when I might upgrade to a Navigator 5.

Cheap 660

Why do all that messing about when you can buy my eleven month old navigater four for £250 with life time mapping

I have to say that sounds very tempting. Is it all up together and will the 4 work with the wheel thingy on the TE and are we talking postage paid??

for it to work with the wheel , it has to be a BMW Nav gps unit (definitely 5 , not sure whether a 4 will work with the wheel).

you will also get the additional information with the 5 :

Yes, the Navigator IV display is controlled by the wheel when you mount the GPS unit in the OEM bracket on the R1200 GS TE.

Thanks chaps and though that looks very good stuff I can live without the extras I think so...................... I feel a deal coming on!

Don't forget the Navigator 4/660 won't take all European mapping like the 550, that's why I didn't change!

Not sure your quite right there Mr Hendy.

I have just updated my Zumo 660 to Map version 2014.40, which is a 3.5gb download. No problems at all fitting it all on.

When I had my Zumo 550 and updated the maps for all of Europe, I had to put them on a card, due to the hard drive not being big enough.

I do like the info given on the screen of the BMW unit about the bike though..................:cool:

Having not had one I was going by the research I did on the Zumo forum which my dealer confirmed when I ordered my bike in July! If I am wrong that's good news although I will still wait for a Navigator 5 now.

I'm with you Gargy. I have had to download the maps to a card for some time now for the 500 because of the size issue. Initially I put some on the card and some on the unit but that gets a real pain so just put it all on the card and it works fine and I assume the IV will do the same from what you say

I think Garmin are making each update larger and larger, just to make it hard to get units up to date, hence forcing the sale of new units.

But then you can delete all unwanted data, such as languages to free up more space.

Can anyone tell me if a std garmin 660 will work in the mount supplied with the WC or would I have to get the BMW badged version?

My understanding is that it would work, but that the wheel controller on the left hand grip does not work with the 550/660, but only with the BMW Navigator IV or V.
