I agree that the rear wheel winch is not a great idea. I'll just carry a block-and-tackle kit with me, thanks.

Yeah I present you on the Left BLOCK and on the right TACKLE and we are not a KIT we are just big KIDS

If you stow the cable off the wheel centre when not in use, it won't affect the handling or balance at all. Not a bad idea at all that one, an absolute doddle to make as well, and if you put the cable over the top of the pulley, it'll pull you out backwards. Who want's one??
Bawdy, I presume the pond you are refering to is the Mediterranean as you're in Cyprus, :D now where did I put that boat and trailer drawing
:beerjug:

Vern have you actually made any?, as I am interested in getting one from somwhere.

Problem as I see it is in the differential between the circumference of the sheave and the circumference of the wheel.

As you winch yourself forward, the wheel will be sliding "backwards" in relation to ground movement.

But if the wheel suddenly grips - the bike is going to leap forwards?

Something to do with Doppler effect or something :D

It'll work

For those who thought this might be a joke, it's not a new idea.

I saw an old ex-Zimbabwe Defence Force Series II Landrover a few years back which had something very similar to this for hauling itself out of sand. Basically, a steel pressing attached outside the wheel and notched to take the end of a cable/recovery rope.

Your only issue with a bike, I suspect, is keeping the whole plot in line with your anchor point as you take up the cable.
