GS1150 2005 not starting

Recently got a 2005 gsa. Had been stood for a number of years. Got it all going, new battery, oils etc etc.
Rode it about 100 miles, all good. Then came to start it a few days later and it wont. All the lights come on, makes a very loud clicking/clacking sound and the lights flicker.
Battery is fine. Cleaned all the terminals, checked the starter switch. Replaced the starter motor and still does the same thing.
Any advice would be much appreciated

Had this very thing last week with my old runabout van . Tried a jumper cable from the Battery Neg straight onto the engine ,cranked fine - earth strap !

start at the beginning , activate the s/m with a wire with the ign on, does it crank ? will it start? does the f-p prime when ign goes live ?

Could be the starter relay. The big Yellow one in the fuse box.

You could try bypassing it by removing it and jumping across the contacts to see if the bike turns over.

When you do, the lights should go out and stay out until you remove the jumper. If you still get your symptoms, then the other place to look is the small black wire attached to the starter motor. Check it’s not all corroded and has a good connection. This wire is what activates the starter solenoid.

Failing this, it does point to a poor main earth connection somewhere.

I recently had running and starting problems with an 1100gs. In the end I traced it down to the side stand switch. You can easily check this by disconcerting the switch and bridging the terminals and see if you can start your bike.
If this is the problem just bypass your switch. Worth a try...

Try this to see if you still get the chattering. Remove Starter Relay and Load Relief Relay. Jump across terminal marked. You won’t get the lights flickering because the load relief relay is removed.

No need for ignition on. Just make sure the bike is in neutral and on centre stand. Just in Case.

The terminals you are jumping are 30 Battery and 87. Just check to make sure. While all bikes should be wired identically, you never know who’s been tinkering previously.

Have you checked starter motor isn't stuck. Easy enough to drop a new one on.

You need to check your main earth strap. It’s located under the battery tray, on the left hand side, on top of the gear box.

It is either loose, or heavily corroded. Either way cleaning it and re-clamping may solve your problem.
