Hi all, strange one this morning. Rode to work as usual. Parked as normal, locked the steering same way et al bla bla. Anyway, inside having a cuppa and another teacher comes up and says my rear light looks on. I said it can't be as I have the keys with me and you can't remove the keys without turning ignition off (apparently). Anyhow, I go look and there my tail light is on, my steering is locked and my dash says EWS...I push brake pedal and light glows then goes back to steady red. I put key in and turn ignition on then off and lock it and it all goes off. Anyone had something similar? 2010 model. Surley thats not right, keys out but rear light (at least) remains on..
Ideas?

Maybe its the switch on the back of the ignition barrel sticking mine used to be a pain in the ass to turn on until I replaced it . I can't imagine why it wouldn't work the other way round.
Ie.: a pain on the to turn off. If its sticking the same.

Never used them but it's not something to do with with parking lights? :nenau

Strange you say that, I have read about the sneak where you hold one indocator in to activate etc. But its not happened in 2 years and 16 ooo miles that I accidentally knocked it for 5 seconds... ( hold down left hand indicator for 5 seconds to get parking lights). or it has just started to seize. But last time I used the left indicator was at least a mile from work, so if it had stuck it would have been stuck for a while. will check and see if it is the case. Dealer has offered me to bring it in..

I would go for the switch at the bottom of the barrel being faulty. Keep an eye on it and see if it happens again.

Just got home and this time it woudln't switch off. I turned key every which way, even removed it with the bars in lock position and the motor and lights still on. Put it in again with motor still running and switched between all positions, again not switching off. Eventually used the kill switch, now sorted! But it must be to do with the barrel. I remember a few months ago, key wouldn't turn any way and couldn't get bike started. Had no WD40 with me. It was almost like i had jammed the barrel. Eventually it turned and started. Told the dealer and they said it was just a fluke. Has happebned 2 or 3 times since but then i put wd40 in and its been fine, except for this...well it'll def be back at dealer..! will keep you posted

I think it is the parking lights, if you switch off the ignition and then press the left hand indicator and hold it for a few seconds then the lights will come on.

To turn it off just switch the ignition on and off again.

Hope this helps.

Well that is strange, typed a bit early me thinks.

Now things are going to get interesting......

ok....

then read this thread..if you're keen..

Okay, so took bike to dealer and they said - yup, its the ignition sensor is gone, we'll replace it. Great, result..or so I thought. They did fix it, and have replaced the ignition switch. Great. I went ot Caterham as G Ford too hard to get to on weekdays. So bike fixed but then they asked for £80

Erm..warranty i said. No said they, switches are not covered but the new part has a 2 year replacement warranty. They apologised. I said I wasn't told by either store that it is not a warranty claim.
OK, except when initial seize up/unable to turn key episode occurred, dealer advised me to pour hot water into barrel to unlock the seize...me being a reasonably believeing guy, did so and solved the problem of not being able to turn the key. I made it home, then I did the wd40 thing (didn't have any on me so water seemed reasonable...) Maybe I am too gullible but let me finish...
So dealer wants money...I say surely the water into keyhole/barrel has a part to play on my "adventure motorcycle" and surely it should not happen within 2 years..it is an adventure bike overall and it does rain in the UK...Besides I did what dealer advised I must be covered..No, as it was at a different dealer your trouble lies with them, pay us first, then claim.

Now here's a thought...A 2010 GS - should not really freeze, lock up in less than 2 years in London...come on, not the Urals here are we..
So phoned original dealer today (they will investigate and call me back--still waiting). My gripe is I did what dealer advised - and he did go through to technical first before saying water. Secondly, if a replacement part is guaranteed for 2 years, surely the original should be too...
Whats the difference between a failed replacement switch and an originally fitted switch. New... - new bike with new switch not covered, but replacement switch covered for 2 years..huh?
I wait to see if they refund me...Or change the design and have ignition switches with covers...

Ok, so top marks to both dealerships in the end. 2 phone calls later and they have refunded me for the ignition switch as a gesture of good will. Nice one South London BMW and Vines guildford. Faith is restored. PS, just did the RBLR1000 mile ride in 24 hours and bike never missed a beat, amidst torrential downpours and spirited riding with an average speed of 52.3 miles over a 1000 mile route. Fuel consumption was also 52.3mpg...

ok, so 6 months on and barrell is starting to stick again. Will be back to dealers soon, as the part is guaranteed for 2 years--their words. Can still operate but its def sticking and hard to turn!

if the new switch was fitted within the warrenty period and you did not contribute to its cost it will not have an xtra length of warrenty it will expire when the bike is 2 yrs old

Yep, pulled up at work, turn ignition off and pulled out key and was suprised to find the engine still running :D

Ignition barrel replaced under warranty :)

A wee bit of advice Do NOT USE WD40 it is a penetrant use 3 in one oil or better still get a tin of Fuchs Silkolene "Silkopen" it's a graphited lubricant and we used to use it all the time in the dealaers

Mine sometimes does not do the self test then won't start. Switch off & on again and it all works. Looks like mine is heading the same way.

Does anyone know any fixes for the switch (not the lock) or is a new one the only option.
