GS1200 ignition problem

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi Guys,

Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pulled the GS out the garage this morning and put my kit on to go for the Touratech day ride and when I turned the ignition switch nothing happened. Removed the seat and put a multi meter on the battery, 12.55 volts. So the problem me thinks is not the battery. If you turn the ignition switch back and forth the LCD display lights up and goes off again but no ignition lights or any power to the servo and so forth.

I remember someone had similar problems but after a search on this forum, I cannot find the thread. I am pissed off at this point in time but need to get this matter sorted out fast.

Checked that the side stand switch is not faulty and pull in clutch to check if it is that overide.
Check the kill switch has registerred.
Some of them had a problem with the immobiliser which is built in.
Trie my spare key, they have a chip in which can go bad.

Checked all above, when I turn the key, absolutely nothing happens. Even tried the spare key. Seems like the ignition switch contacts are faulty. Checked the ignition switch wires, plugs are secure and no corrosion but still no power up. Battery is full and the 1200 does not have any fuses so I do not know where to look at from here. Seems that I am going to have to take the bike into BMW for them to fix it. It seems that this is also a known fault as a mates 1200 did the same.

Any well constructive information, feedback would be appreciated. This happened to ma mate of mine but he cannot remember what the problem was. I would hate this to happen if I am out on a ride in the bush and cannot get out and a recovery vehicle cannot get there due to the terain we are riding.

Disconected the battery for a short while and connected it again but no improvement. :spitfire :spitfire I hope BMW are going to do this repair under warranty!!! :spitfire :spitfire

:spitfire :spitfire Glad this never happened when we were in Namibia 2 months ago. :spitfire :spitfire

I am at a loss for words.

BMW need to sort the wiring pob's out on the 1200 ADV otherwise guys will still look at the 1150 ADV because less electrical or CAN-BUS issues.

Happened to a mate of mine - the bike does not recognise the chip in the key - he had a new unit fitted to the bike under warranty - sorry but can't help with further or exact details.

sounds like it could be the detector ring around the ignition lock, there seemed to be a duff batch a while ago, spread out across hp2 as well as 12GS

Agree it doesn't sound like a battery, but a fully charged battery will give nearer 13v.
