I have an 09 1200 SE, with 9k on it. The bike goes pretty well, its been de-catted and has the accelarator module fitted. After reading about the problems with the F/D i noticed that my bike "rumbles" or "hums" from the rear end. It gets worse when more wieght is added. Today i felt the final drive unit and it was rather warm or even hot,to touch. This suggests to me an over tight bearing, which could eventually lead to failiure. There is no side play in the wheel rim.Is this normal? Is there any way of checking the oil level in the unit

was there a grumbeling feel through the pegs
did the back end feel like a flat tyre

any oil weeping?

oh and there should be a small amount of play, but if all these together, then its a FD bearing change.

Don't fret

THe FD thing is a pain. But it is more in prospect than in reality. I have an SE too. Done 17500 no problem. Kind of hope it is a better build for being an SE. Who knows. :nenau

The bearing usually goes slowly. I have a mate from Croatia, whose FD started going in the UK. Diagnosed by Vines, but still good for a 1000 miles in freezing conditions. When they go the smell is distinctive. Like a permenant leak of fuel. really unpleasant.:( I had the one on my 07 1200 go.

So ride it. Listen to it. and enjoy:bounce1:bounce1

How worn is your rear tyre?

My SE got really quite "rumbly" when the rear tyre was squared-off.

A new rear tyre smoothed things, and its now fine.

hi, thanks for the reply. there is a slight rumble through the pegs ,but i was told that is normal. there are no oil leeks. Is it normal for the F/D to get very warm when the bikes just been doing 80mph for about 10 mins? Cheers

its a bearing under load, of course its gona get hot:comfort

how hot is a different matter

It certainly gets warm - always has, but I guess it depends how warm.

Have you replaced your tyre yet? Mine lasted 12k, but was pretty square for the last 1k.

(G)rumblings

I wonder if this is your first GS/ first BMW/first shaft drive ? I have had ten and I generally feel that the FD is on the way out ....especially when they were new! I have never had any FD problems in 30 years however....but perhaps that is just my luck.

fd

be careful to this please
never use other brake pads from the original of bmw
last time i went and change my back tire and they asked me there
if i would like to change me also the brake pads since the back wheel was out
i send okey change it
thet put on new brake pads the ferrodo gold
those pads are more thicker than the original so the problem that came on is that when you use a lot the rear brake it gets overheated and also affect the final drive and might bring a problem to fd becouse of overheated

I doubt it!

"....those pads are more thicker than the original so the problem that came on is that when you use a lot the rear brake it gets overheated and also affect the final drive and might bring a problem to fd becouse of overheated ..."
If the pads are TOO thick they will be on all the time so whether or not you use them, it will 'seriously' overheat everything!. Why, anyway use a 'lot of the rear brake' ? i never touch my pedal.

Warm Rear Drive

I've carried a scientific test on the temperature of my rear drive.

After 25 miles of 70 mph (:augie) dual carriageway use, with essentially no braking, the case was hot to the touch - you could put you hand on it, but wouldn't want to leave it there too long.

Next day I repeated the exercise on my Moto Guzzi with a very similar result, if anything it was a little hotter (according to the internationally recognised 'how long can I hold this for' scale).

Somewhat surprisingly I have read that some people consider that Guzzis suffer from reliability problems (!), but final drive failure is not on the usual list.

So on balance I think a warm rear drive after a ride is probably pretty normal.

Having said that I now expect the final drives on both bikes to expire in the next 100 miles.

Thanks for all replies, I have now replaced the rear tyre (conti trail attack), and at the same time changed the F/D oil. It has removed most of the drive noise and improved vibration whilst under load. It still gets warm ,but i am happy because i think this is normal
