gs1200 width?

hi all....new lad here, test rode an 800 and 1200 gs yesterday......tried to get down side of house(narrow) on the 800 and just managed to get down, didnt try the 12 as i went straight into the peaks..so my question is can someone plz measure the width of a 12 at both ...bar ends/handguards and ends of both pot to pot......more than likely i can get the fence moved back 3" if needed..but would be good to know real world width cheers lee..

The BMW web site says that the 1200 is not as wide as the 800 by 10mm at the mirrors !!

800 v. 1200

Anyway I can assure you that if you can afford it and you do not intend to go off road the 1200 is a very much more civilized bike to ride - particularly if you carry a pillion. The 800 is not very much lighter, has a similar performance on paper, but is much noisier and does not feel so stable. I went from a 1200GS to an 800GS & back to a 1200GS - and wasted a lot of money in the process!

Well funny you should ask, I didn't . My garage is at the rear of my house only used for motorbikes and working on bikes etc.. Every other bike I've owned have gone down side of my house and next doors garage no problem. My R1200GS doesn't fit by about 6" I have to keep it in someone elses garage about a mile away. What a pain and what a dickhead I am. So this is a 6 month old bike, best I've ever owned and it lives in someone elses garage

Mine fits in the shed I built for a 650 Bandit, complete with full luggage. I just waggle the bars when pushing it the door which is only just 1m width.

1200GS only look big. It's actually a couple kilos lighter dry than my old K6 Bandit, easier to put on the stand and maneouvre engine off because of those wide bars. Damn sight more rewrding to ride as well, especially the front suspension which makes it possible to keep riding with a full bladder

Thinking laterally why not get one of these: http://www.bustersclassic.co.uk/proddetail.asp?prod=567197 plonk the bike on at the start of the narrow bit, turn the bars to one side, and push it down the side of the house, assuming the small wheels will roll ok on whatever it's paved with?

My shed is far too small for the R1200 GS too, the best thing about the bike is that the front of the bike is a lot further from the handlebars than anything that I have owned. So ride up to the shed, stop when the front wheel bounces over the step, wriggle the bars in and easy she is put to bed, sorted

What I keep forgetting about is the width of the engine. The bars clear the fence and I can cruise down the path by the side of the house right up to the point where I come to the gas meter box that is right at cylinder hight Been close a few times to hitting it but always wiggled in time.

That's a lot of expense for a bike. I wish the Missus loved me that much
