Can it really be as involved as the Haynes manual says? Drop the forks, fabricate some special "tools", take them apart etc? Why can't I take the top cap off and undo a drain plug, like all sane bikes have?

On past BMW's with telelever suspension the recommended oil change is only when the seals are worn. The bushes and seals are replaced along with 10W oil of the correct measure. This oil quantity has changed over the years as the design changed. I have not heard of any 1200 requiring new seals and guide bushes but then again I'm not in the motorcycle trade. I just tinker with the 1100S in the garage and has done this recently, first time in 11 years since manufacture. Oil was as new.
