Sorry I know I've seen a posting about this before, but 15 minutes of searching in various ways hasnt turned anything up...

Anyway... bit of advise for those of you with bikes still under the original warranty - check your screens and winglets.

I'm have had cracks forming in them for a fair while now - probably over a year so well within the original warranty period. I've just never remembered to mention them at service as there was normally one or two more major things needing replaced under warranty.

Anyway, the bike is now four months outside its warranty and just in for the 24k service and this time I did mention it as the cracks are now bad enough that I noticed water coming through them on the way back from Magny Cours in the rain.

BMW extended warranty doesnt cover these parts so I was refered to BMW Customer Services, who initially responded by telling me screens and winglets are never covered under warranty and then once pushed on the issue responded with the following statement from Mrs Leigh Martyn and Mr Steve Bellars

"Dear Mr Hudson

Further to out telephone conversation, I can confirm that I have consulted Mr Steve Bellars, Aftersales Support Manager from BMW Motorrad in regard to the cracks that have appeared on the windscreen of your bike.

Mr Bellars has advised that these cracks appear due to the use of proprietary cleaners containing aromatic hydrocarbons. These properties have been found to attack the screen, damaging the plasticity and causing cracks to appear.

Mr Bellars has advised that BMW Motorrad recommend that the windscreens are cleaned using plain water. Excessive dirt and debris such as dead flies should be removed by soaking the area with a damp cloth and then wiping clean.

I trust this is of use to you. I am sorry that we are unable to conclude this in the way you had hoped.

Yours sincerely

BMW Motorrad UK

Mrs Leigh Martyn"

These parts are covered under the original two year warranty, so dont delay if you have a problem with yours.

18 months old and 8000 miles and my GSA ones are ok :)

I only use the finest silks dipped in the purest spring water collected by virgins and occasionally use Asses Milk to get it to really shine :o

John, I've fixed it for you, but I'd get your posting removed if I were you...

BMW Customer Services say, you are only supposed to use water and if the stuff is really subborn soak it for hours with a damp cloth.

the hand book say BMW products only... anything else might damage the parts or finish...

all sounds like tosh to me though :D
