The 2009 model doesn't need oil, it has ceramic liners and unobtainium piston rings:thumb

Ok, fair enough I expected some abuse for this question, ive read all the posts and its ideally 20w 50 for the gs, but ive been to 4 garages in my area and none of them carry it. I read the permissable viscositys also and one range is confusing me, so this may be another dumb question, but when it lists a permissable viscosity of 15w 40, but operating at >-0○C does that mean it cant be used ? See full table of "permisible" oils.......

AE 5 W- ≥30 -20...20 °C, Operation at low temperatures
SAE 10 W-40 -10...30 °C, Operation at moderate temperatures
SAE 15 W- ≥40 ≥0 °C
SAE 20 W- ≥40 ≥0 °C
SAE 5 W- ≥50 ≥-20 °C, High-grade and synthetic oils, operation in all temperature ranges
SAE 10 W- ≥50 ≥-20 °C, High-grade and synthetic oils, operation in all temperature ranges***

Go for an oil that has a hot rating of 50, I would suggest either a 10W50 synthetic such as Castrol Power 1 racing, or ACTEvo 20w50Mineral. Any thinner and it will rattle like feck when it gets hot.

Best price is from WWW.Moto-oil.co.uk or Opie oils.

If you want a cheap compatible 20W50 Mineral oil look for your local Unipart stockist and use their own label PRO M300 oil, it's fine and meets BMWs specification I've used it myself previously on a 1200 without any issues whatsoever.
 
No 50, s available. I live out in the sticks. Been to 4 garages 15w 40 was the only one on the permissable list but says operating at 0 degrees ???
 
Surely you have a Unipart place in a nearby town or city?

Do you live in Timbuctu or something??
 
Halfords do a 20/50 classic oil. There is no clutch in the oil on a boxer so it will be fine or mail order alternatives if you think you need something better.
 
I use the standard Putoline 20/50 4 stroke oil which is widely available but anything decent will do fine.

Now, move along everyone, nothing more to see here;)

The Halfords 20/50 isn't up to the BMW spec.
I think the halfords my be an "H" spec, which is fine for morris marinas and cortinas.
