GSA (12plate) Brake Failure

Hi Guys,

Hoping you can shed some light on a problem that reared its ugly head this morning.

After a good hours ride my ABS light came on and the Brake Failure light lit.

Tried the Brakes and the front instantly nose dived and hardly anything from the rear.

Tried the rear on its own amd the ABS is kicking in almost immediatelly with no effect on the braking, by that I mean NO braking!

I have turned off the ABS and I do have brakes front and rear so I know this must be a problem with the ABS..

I have had a read and the horror stories about it being the ABS Pump or modulator, which is a ££££££££££££ to fix.

Just want your guys input, does this sound as bad as I fear it is..

Same on the way home, half hour with no issues, then bingo, Brake Failure Light and ABS warning came on again.

Only difference this time was that I could still use the rear brake without the ABS kicking in as soon as I apply pressure to the pedal!

have you cheked rear wheel bearing for play?

I've just had mine replaced after all else failed

Its warranty ran out in April, only 16k on the clock so if it needs work then I will be getting BMW to do the work, I do not expect such a part to have a failure with this low mileage.

Maybe it's got bored. Use the bike more.
Alternatively check wheel rotation sensors.

Maybe it's got a sad on due to all the negative waves.

You could try hitting the ABS modulator motor with a plastic mallet to see if the brushes have stuck.

This needs a trip to dealers right from the start, let them diagnose it & hopefully apply for extended warranty/goodwill..
As Bendy Toy says check sensors, but intermittent so contaminated sensor or final drive problems... Either way dealer diagnose as some get 'touchy' & blame you for messing..

I've had the rear ABS sense changed twice now under warranty - 2010 Anniversary GSA
Similar symptoms - ABS light on, but no braking issues
The last time they took it off, they replaced all the final drive oil, as it had all gone white - there was water getting in there somewhere !

Update 'GSA (12plate) Brake Failure'

Just had the bike hooked up to a diagnostic thingymabob.

No Live Faults
2 Reported Faults

1st Low Network voltage, ok so the battery needs a charge.
2nd Rear Wheel Speed Sensor... ah that makes sense now..

If this if faulty it will think that the wheel is stationary thus when brake is applied the electrickery will release the brake to the rear again... which it was doing.

All working again now

I've just returned from darkest Roehampton after having the rear sensor replaced. 2011 TC GSA. Cheers Neil.

If that was a real fault on the rear wheel sensor (signal improbable?), it might come back again as the thing gets worse, then latch the brake failure light at power up as eventually the ABS ECU puts it into extended monitoring when the error keeps coming up on the move. Mine went from intermittent to latched in about a month. Your speedo will pack up or become erratic too.

They're £66 quid from BMW, and it would be wise to get the o-ring and centring ring as well. Not the trickiest job in the world but you ought to reset the fault log on a GS911, and doing it on a ramp is easier than lying on the floor.

My brake failure light is currently on and the speedo sometimes doesn't work also? It's booked in for a service so will wait and see what they say!
