Have just managed to pick up a set of BMW Ali Panniers for my GSA.

I was wondering if anyone had either treated the Ali or covered it in Armorguard/ 3m before and what their opinions were.

Have also got ACF50 in mind and good ol' fashioned polishing too.

Thanks

OK, so I could not amend my first post on this - have actually read a lot of the posts regarding the use of ACF50 and Anodizing etc - but has anyone done a good job using the protective film that can be applied to the body work of cars and bikes to protect against stone chips and such like. Just wondered if this stuff will work well on panniers etc????

Covering GSA Ali Panniers

Hi Python,

I "attempted" to cover mine a few weeks ago. I got some blue peter stylee "sticky back plastic" from WH Smiths , I think it is about £3.00 per roll. I tried using big pieces to cover front / side / back and then a smaller piece for the lids. All was going well until I got to the rivetts which looked terrible when covered , so I tore it all off.

I then decided to cut out smaller pieces with the backing sheet to the plastic still in place, and not bother trying to cover the rivetts. This doesnt look to bad and certainly protects the majority of the panniers & top box from scuffs when me & the missus are getting on/off the bike. At only £3.00 a pop I'm going to have another go sometime and see if I can improve things.

One tip (for what it's worth) - the problem you will find is avoiding air bubbles between the ali & the plastic. I used a solution of water with a tiny amount of washing up liquid , this lets you slip the plastic film & use the edge of a ruler to smooth it out as you go.

Hope this helps :thumb2

I think Mike P has done something similar with his panniers:rolleyes:
worth dropping him a PM for pics and advice, BUT he is a perfectionist:rob

As we frantically buy up Tour-X lids, BM jackets, very large adventure-biased bikes etc so we look like we might have just rolled in from 60 days off-roading in Kazakhstan.... is it so bad that our panniers develop a bit of character...?

Have to say I agree with you. My bike doesn't get cleaned very often as I use it every day and haven't got time at the weekends. The ally top box is scratched, my lid is scratched and my gear is a bit mucky from riding through the winter. I still have regular services, check the fluids and tyres and cover it each evening.

I just cannot be arsed with all this cleaning and primping and prepping - they're machines for gawd's sake! Let's use 'em as BMW intended! :thumb2

No harm in protecting it to make it last - thats why Touratech and Wunderlich make a small fortune too!!
