GSA BMW Panniers - Finish Quality vs Vinyl Wrap

Thought forums were about friendly people sharing same interest and ideas. Is it necessary to start swearing and ganging up against those of us who see things differently? How about those of you who contribute nothing to this stay out of this? Then there would be no bad feelings or arguments. :)

It was tongue in cheek ... Having some fun.
I also have a new GSA with the OEM boxes and can understand what you are saying. Have you considered some decals as an alternative to wraping?
I have some ordered from motoreflective.com (USA) to improve visibility.

The OEM ones all look the same after a few minutes out the box, you do just get used to them really, whilst I like the look of the vynil wrapped ones I'm not really bothered enough to be arsed, try them as they are, if you still feel like it in six months fine go for it.

Don't worry. Your not alone. I think the panniers are pretty crap. The alloy is very soft, you can scratch it with your finger. They really look crap after a very short time.
They should have anodised them. But I guess we don't complain enough, so there is no need.
Any mark shows and sticks out.
If you enjoy trying to keep your bike looking mint, all you can do is wrap them or paint.
If you get them wrapped by the 'experts' you will probably also have a lot of knife marks on the alloy where they cut the vynal.
Signature in Italy is probably your best option.
There's are precut in sets.
Honestly, it's real easy to fit. Doesn't take long. There is room for the odd mistake. It doesn't cover the entire pannier, but covers enough.
They did offer a 30% discount on Black Friday. But it's back to a UKGSER 10% discount now.
You can pay by PayPal and it takes about 5 days to arrive.

Not everyone wants to trash their £15-18000 GSA with dirt and mud. I don't. I bought because I like the ride, the looks, the gadgets, storage. BMW panniers cost around £1400 and they should not be marked at all from new. It's shoddy manufacturing and a cheek to be honest.

Hang on a minute...Yes, the panniers /Top box are expensive, but at no time do I ever remember Touratech saying that their panniers are treated against the weather or protected against scratching.

It's nothing to do with shoddy manufacturing. I would think that 90% of purchasers understand that the luggage is made of alloy, which as most folks know, is a soft metal that will scratch easily and mark when in contact with moisture.

Some folks like the patina that's produced after a few months of use, some don't. If you're someone that doesn't, wrap them or paint them or seal them in some other way...simple.

We hope to have a kit similar to the Signature kits for DIY wrapping of the alloy boxes available from our web shop soon, ours should be available in Black or Clear for the panniers and Top Box, probably in our shop the New Year. https://www.humvee-graphics.com/

I had my panniers and top box wrapped on my Triple Black GSA a couple of years ago to good effect, it's a pain to do properly unless you remove all the luggage strap loops, locks and hinges etc. (I didn't.......) a mate wrapped mine for me and commented that he never wanted to see another BMW alloy box as long as he lived....... so a kit which partially wraps the box with cut outs for the locks, hinges & strap loops etc. is a good compromise.

My old bike with boxes completely wrapped in matte black, it was easy to clean and lasted well.

As an aside I haven't (yet) wrapped the alloy top box on my LC GSA and it's in reasonable shape with minimal dulling to the alloy and hardly a scratch evident, when I wash the bike I dry the top box with a chamoix and wipe it after with a cloth and a little silicone spray or Armor All, works for me :thumby:
As for the heroes who say it's an adventure bike it's supposed to be dirty yawn............ you do it your way I'll do it mine, to me it's a big practical tourer :augie

Vinyl Wrap is not the answer.

Vinyl wrapping provides the ability to express yourself and tart your bike up as you like, but it is a fragile solution.

To the left and just below the rear latch you can see a minor scratch that has torn through the vinyl and exposed the Ali below.
I have a couple of such marks elsewhere on the vinyl wrapping on the bike.
It's not a permanent solution.

Here's mine with the signature cd wrap.

If anyone doesn't like it, they can fuck off.:rob

In short, you only want to hear from people who agree with you.

You'll not get it, as you are on an open forum, lots of whose members believe the panniers should be scratched and covered with a patina. Whether the patina comes from a weathering in Rhyll or Riga and the scratches from Tesco or Tashkent, makes no odds. Others will think that the smallest blemish spoils the whole experience. Inbetween, there's a raft of bods spanning the spectrum.

Make you own mind up where you sit.

Well I wrapped mine and as Humvee said its a pain to do properly and took ages, but I'm pleased with the result, it's only vinyl so if it gets scratched I can always wrap over it again. Oh and you need some Humvee stickers to add some class.:thumb2

Nice job :thumby:

If the weather marking really bothers you, you can always fit a set of vario's which are anodized and as such are resistant to staining, they stay smart, are better for filtering, and are more practical for most purposes, and whilst they don't enhance the rugged looks of the bike, they still look pretty good on a GSA, just as they do on the GS.

Got to say...Humvee's bike looks the 'dog's bollards' in that black livery. :thumb

You are having your panniers exchanged by the dealer's, as you rejected them. Job done. Get over it. Move on.

As to wrapping, polishing to shine like a billion suns or scratched, dented and caked in mud from the pistes (or just scratched on a bush in the drive)..... It's all down to personal taste and - to some degree or another - time, money, keenness or laziness and, maybe even whether SWMBO (and mates) think it's a good idea.

Bods often claim that their bike makes a statement about them as the owner; chose whatever statement you want to make about yourself, expressing it through your awesome steed. It's your bike, your money, your life. Get on with it.

:D:clap:.................TO THE POINT WAPPING...:thumb2
