GSA but no keys !!

I am looking at a stolen recovered 08 GSA. It has minor plastic damage and no keys. How much is it going to cost me to replace the lost keys ? and will I have to replace the ECU, or can BMW code the keys from the Frame number or something ?
 
Sorrry Happyhenry...... I mean Im looking to buy a previously stolen recovered bike supplied without keys...
 
I'd get the ignition changed etc. Just so you have a new "fresh" set of keys. Just so the insurance can't argue there is a spare set of keys floating about if you ever need to claim.

The dealer will be able to sort this out - they are probably the ones to ask for a price.
 
Dick b, there is a font of knowledge on this site, not much of it comes from me but wtf!... Anyway, get yourself introduced on the newbie section, and I recommend sponsoring the site (£12) and then blast the site for info...... giving as much detail as you can........ as, to be fair, at present it sounds like you have nicked a R1200GS and your looking to get it rolling as easy as possible...... so feck off, I'm not telling you, you lightfingered little tvvat!....:green gri

IIRC a dealer can get new keys cut/coded from the factory for you providing you can prove ownership (V5C) and bike details (VIN etc). Easiest answer is to phone a dealer or BMW UK and ask them (Google them for the phone number). What would happen should an owner lose their keys??

No doubt a replacement V5C will have to be issued from DVLA, which should show the current registered keepers address. Can the original owner be traced/contacted and any spare keys held be provided ? It could make things a lot easier for you. Technically the keys now belong to the insurance company/loss adjuster.
 
FWIW, I was told, by my dealer, that a duplicate set can be ordered from that factory, subject to supply of necessary proof. If you lose that set, then you really are stuffed because no others are available or would ever be produced.

That sort of security, means that there are few stolen 1200's on the road.

So... go and see a dealer cos nobody on this site could help you

Considering that most BMW dealers seem to do a warranty claim for the keys when the bike is new to get two metal keys I'd say that they can cut new keys given that they know the codes needed etc.

I asked this question when looking at 1200GSA and they dealer responded that in order to code the ignition key you'd have to plug the bike into the diag computer and it would request the key code to use from BMW in Germany.

He also said if it was stolen it'll also light up like a christmas tree and BMW would also know which dealer ship it was at.

Now as there are 33 dealers in the UK that is something that I believe they could make work.

Doesn't really matter as the advice in any case would be "take it to a dealer". AFAIK they are the only ones who can make it work.

I suppose we just have to be careful ..

MCN and the likes recommend not posting pics of your bikes online and giving away hints where your bike is parked.

Maybe BHT can post the IP address for this chap just so people his area can be on the watch out for a thieving ****.

Good point guys...... but I am legit !!! and your right, I was looking at the one on Ebay.... just up the road from me and so may go and have a look, although it looks a bit rich now ! Thanks for the advice though.
