Shit..... just looked and my GS Touratech bars aren't gonna fit the new GSA are they....:blast (well not unless i weld a tab on for the upper bars and modify the upper bar length to suit.... )

OPTIONS ?

I know the BMW supplied ones will suffice, but just humour me.... Whats the best upgrade so the cylinders wont get scraped or touch the ground in a fall (standing still or moving)

Add the touratech brace bar?
Add some wunderlich rock guards (the louvered plate ones that sit inside the BMW bars....look cool)
Add some cylinder head protectors.... Do the X Heads fit with BMW bars?

Whilst I'm at it. Is there any need to upgrade the upper bars? I see both Givi and Touratech to an extension. Not for now.... but maybe later...

err.............................nope

FFS......... the oemGSA engine bars will do just fine, they're made by TT anyway

The bike will be protected in a slow speed drop - if you crash at anything faster you'll probably need to call on your insurance anyway:rolleyes:

No need to spend any more on extra crashbars/protectors, on top of the crashbars that are already fitted to the fecking bike:blast

The standard BMW bars should be fine but add some head protectors as well if you are taking it off road, Hyde Park doesn't count :)

Hexheads WILL fit under the oem crash bars...............just, but they do. I have 'em :D

I have tested the BMW engine crash bars. A number of times. They work and when I sold the bike it looked like new......unless you got on all fours and peered under the crash bars to see......a scratch!

One time, with my wife on the pillion, we went down on a very rock strewn unmade road in Argentina. We were stationary but we hit the deck so hard, and the road surface so uneven, we were both trapped under the bike.......only damage was to my pride and that scratch, oh and my wife wondered what time dinner was!

By the way those cylinder protector thingies are next to useless if you go down onto an eneven surface......apparently 99.99 % of bikes with cylinder protectors never get dropped, trust me as I cannot tell a lie.

But they're not just to protect against drops. they also protect against stones, gravel etc pebble-dashing the front/underneath of the cylinders. Each to their own ;)

Oh no, forgot about those nasty stones.........your'e correct of coarse. Can't be too careful.

The standard bars are fine. Plenty of people have dropped their GSA, and the bike has been fine.:thumb

Touratech like to scare people into spending money on shite they don't need!

Right, so going back to this. johny boxer need not respond :blagblah Im going to try out some off tarmac stuff with the gammy leg and see how i get on, theres a nice chap at www.rideanyroad.co.uk who's offered some one on one training. The wunderlich rock guards look a little flimsy for the weight of the bike, from what i can see its just P clips holding the guard in place. Anyone tried them? The Touratech ones look like they have some impact absorption, with a rubber piece between the guard and cylinder head, but they are twice the price... ouch!

At least when you've had a spill off road and the wild you can grate a potato and make crisps.
