Hi Chaps,

Sorry new to this Boxer engine mellarki
Now covered 5000 miles since last service on my 07 GSA and oil level in sight glass on side of engine was looking low:eek

So I topped up to absolutley full on sight glass, after bike had stood overnight but then on reading manual, I should have topped it up with engine HOT

The manual says oil level will increase when hot, meaning I could of overfilled:blast

Is this a real issue or not:nenau

Welcome your advise please:comfort

Its no problem mate.
If its to top of sight glass cold it will be just fine

forget it

By the way, depending on miles it will continue to burn oil to about 22000 miles. Some burn oil for ever.

Just be careful you don't overfill. You will hear a lot of stories about Boxers using oil but I think a lot of it is putting oil in when it just ain't needed:blast

You will get many different levels showing and it depends on whether it's hot or cold. Sometimes, you'll check it and it's full then and hour later it's shows nothing. Often teh other way round as well.

I glance at mine every time I ride it when it's cold and as long as there is oil in the window, the jobs a gud un! Even though I do check it, I know it's OK because it hasn't used a drop in 67k:D

All I would say is don't get obsessed with it and keep topping it up every time it's a bit low:thumb

If you overfill it you will get excess oil drawn into the airbox via the crankcase breather pipe on the underside of the LH cylinder, resulting in blue smoke from the exhaust pipe. If it ain't kicking out blue smoke you should be okay.

what kind of oil did you use ?

Many thanks for all your responses and I have desided to run it but keep an eye out for smoking etc.
Will let you know how I get on.

I spoke to the main dealer who last serviced it and they use Castrol 10/50
Power 1 fully synthetic, so I bought a litre and used about 1/2 to top up.

Cheers:thumb2

It'll be fine, I did the exact same thing on my last bike without issue

I normally find half a litre about right when the level drops near the min mark

That said my current bike has used virtually none whilst my last one used loads :nenau
