Hi,

I am interested to know if anyone knows of an easy way to change the locks on the BMW 1200 GSA paniers. I recently purchased a replacement panier after my previous one was badly damaged riding off-road but thought i could have kept the locks from the old one.

Any advice would be great.

Regards,

Jimmy.

The pannier locks can be coded to your keys..so your new one can be done.

Any BMW dealer can do this...some might charge...most won't if you've bought the pannier from them.

It's not too dear if they do charge....I think I was quoted about £6 a lock once (..but they then did it for free).

You can do it yourself....but having seen them do it I think it is money well spent to let them do it :thumb2

Does that mean that I cannot remove the locks from the original boxes?

I'd expect you could swap the barrels with the old lock. This has been asked before. Have a look at this thread:

and the ADVrider link. The link is for the vario pannier, but I'd guess the principal would be the same. You have already got the correct tumblers (or whatever they're called), so hopefully it wont be a problem.

Have to admit I've not looked to see how easy this is with GSA panniers.

Just found this link from another thread:

I damaged an aliminium pannier on my bike, and all they do is code the lock on the new pannier...but thinking about it I might have bought a new lock set for it.

But to answer your question...yes, you can remove your lock from your old pannier, and then inserting it into your new one.

Again, I think it would be worth asking your BMW dealer to do it, cos it looked tricky when I saw it done, and it's probably something that gets easier for them with practice.....either that or just go and ask a few questions and pick their brains, I'm sure they'll tell you how to do it :thumb2

do you have a key for the locks that are on there?

if so, I think its just a case of putting the key in, that will withdraw all the pins into the barrel and mean it should be able to be released...

alternatively the panniers are probably coded to the bike they were originally on - it would be quicker to find it and swap the bike over for yours... less fuss that way - you'll need to swap plates as well and you've got a 50/50 chance the colour is right!
