GSA Pannier key won't go in?

OK - I 'Manned Up' and hit is a few times with a plastic mallet and the key's in and turns ok. Its a bit of a pig to pull out and I now need to hit the key reasonably hard with the palm of my hand each time I need to put the key in - but it works :)

My next question.... Since the panniers were supplied with the bike in 2013, are they covered under the warranty? I did call Vines in Guildford about dropping it in (before my final attempt) and they sounded particularly arsey about it - saying they needed the original receipt by the supplying dealer, which I don't have. So I guess its either a) live with it, or b) Take on a fight with motorrad :(

Good start so far to my BMW ownership experience - and its raining :(

They most certainly will be covered by the warranty as its not a consumable item.
Your first port of call should be with the dealer you got it from - thats who your contract of sale is with.
You dont need the receipt.

Now you have it off is it not possible to have the 'lock' rebuilt. I could have a burr or something preventing the lock from turning. Or have a dismantle yourself as they are very basic and would save a trip.

Pannnier Locks

If the pannier locks have just been rekeyed (badly) it is possible that is the problem. There are 7 slots in the barrel of the lock but you only put coded "bits" in the first six. If a 7th has been fitted, the key will not go back in all the way and consequently cannot turn.

Lots of videos on you tube on how to recode locks yourself will explain this better than I have.

managed to get the barrel out and swap with the top box (which I doubt I'll use much) will have another look at the 'slots' and see how many are in it - I've a feeling there are all 7. These were BMW fitted panniers that came with the bike 2013 90th Edition.

Cheers for all your help guys. So nice having a forum like this for useful information and advice. Hopefully I can 'pay it forward' in time :)

Popped into Vines in Guildford and they turned out to be VERY helpful in the end. They took the barrel out and found it to be bent (cough no idea how that could have happened ...) and were about to order a new cylinder when I mentioned to them to check the number of 'shims' in it, it turned out to indeed have the 7th unnecessary one so they took it out and it works perfectly now. You guys were spot on. (XBX)

in hindsight I probably could have fixed it myself, but knowing my luck, if I removed the key ALL shims would have fallen out and I'd have been in a right mess - so rather they did it. Just glad it turned out to be faulty and not my blundering incompetence lol

Result! I've checked the other 7 cylinders and they all look fine.

Cough Cough that will be the Hammer then!! Hey Lotus nothings a problem dont be afraid to come in for advice in the future we dont bite enjoy your new toy
