A mate has sold his panniers to some bod who says his bmw dealer can't change the locks to his key without replacing them at £150 is that tosh?

Dealer probably isn't going to split the locks to change the wafers around and so has more than likely quoted for the price of new replacements.

Is it a big deal to split the locks then! Can it be done if you find an obliging dealer for a small fee.

Not sure if you can split them and re wafer as the big hold up for dealers last year was not the boxes themselves but getting the locks which had to come from the factory

A good dealer can do it, but if your mate didn't buy the panniers from the dealer, they probably don't want to do it, as they wont make any money.

Had my varios re-keyed today, Took all of 10 minutes and no charge.

not so long back had my ali panniers & topbox re-keyed took 20 minutes no charge. So can be done quite easily.

i too heard that the LC model Top boxes and Panniers cannot be re keyed like they use to do with the Hex heads ! no idea if its true as BMW are telling a few porkies about things at present

Vario Panniers and Topcase can be recoded without dealer involvment. It is very simple to do it yourself. I believe it is not such easy with Alu panniers and boxes for GSA though.

Locks for BMW aluminium panniers on the LC cannot be recoded. Replacement locks only, from BMW.
