Same bike different seats

Can I just ask is the seat on the left just a standard GS seat or a lowered GS seat?

Must admit I did not realise the GS seats were lower than the GSA seats - It's amazing how many seats are advertised as seats from a GS / A which also implies they are one and the same which is clearly not the case looking at these pics......

The one on the left looks like an "extra low" from a GS.

Sent using a Jedi mind trick!

The plan now is to have the original GSA rear shock refurbished and the spring replaced with a shorter one, at the same time I will have the front refurbished. The company in Stowmarket will do them for £309 plus VAT and it will be done in 5 days.

I am also going to have the plain GS seat refurbished and recovered.

The one on the left is the BMW low seat - same as mine. That's what I would recommend, I can stay in the seat for an hour and half, no problems with comfort.

Interesting options........

I am 5' 8" and 29" inside leg and have had my '07 GSA for about 18 months now. I bought the lowered Sargeant seat for mine not long after I bought the bike which I like and overall I am happy with the set up - Sometimes a bit tippy toes but one leg usually works fine for me.

My last bike was a road only Jap 4 and one of the attractions of the GSA was being able to do some of the trails through local hills again from time to time. This is where I don't find things so easy sometimes - I was out about a month ago on some trails and I ended up having to stop on some un-even ground where the front & rear wheels were up an inch or two maybe than the centre of the bike and I could not stop it falling on to it's side. With using the leverage of the handlebars at full lock I managed to get the bike up again but with a full tank these GSA's aint light and besides that I hate dropping bikes!

On looking to see if I can lower the bike an inch or 2 looks like I have 3 possible easy options for sub £200ish;

1) Buy a Hyperpro 30mm lowering spring kit - £85 for each spring

2) Buy another standard GS rear shock and spring which would maybe lower the bike 20 to 25mm going by previous posts - Maybe £130 used

3) Buy a low standard GS seat (Although on thinking about it I do like the comfort & look of my current Sargent seat right enough.)

Choices, choices.......

Any other thoughts?

I have a spare standard GS seat if you wish to try that I could send you!

I you go for the Hyperpro Spring you nay need to change the rear Spring as the front one won't effect the seat height.

By replacing the GSA shock with a used one from a GS will reduce the seat height but be wary of its condition.

The cost to refurbish the shocker assembly is £109 plus VAT so maybe an option could be buy a cheap GS rear shock, have it refurbished and fit that, which will lower the seat by approx 20mm

The seat on the left hand picture is a low GS option and worth mentioning that it is also narrower than a GSA seat which also helps.
RonnieG why don't you see if you can find someone near to you to try out a different seat before committing?

I have the low bmw seat on my gsa tried a Sargent and it was to wide
Get a low bmw one and have a gel pad fitted much cheaper than a suspension rebuild

+1
And you are on my doorstep bungy

I am 5ft 8ins I have tried the following seats on my 08 GSA.

GSA OEM - Too high and too hard. Apart from the long leg reach it was unbelievably uncomfortable after an hour in the saddle.

GS OEM - Ok for leg reach and a lot more comfortable but there seems to be a lump at the back that hit my coccyx after about an hour. Once I'd felt that it was always annoying to use.

Sargent standard height - The width and pan shape reduced my effective leg reach and the seat edge dug into my thigh. I never even tried to ride with it. No thanks.

Kahedo Low Low - Fantastically bottom friendly (as was the Sargent) and no thigh rubbing. BUT knees felt scrunched and the bars were like ape hangers. I was back with the GS seat after less than 5 miles.

Kahedo Standard - Nominally the same height as the OEM GS seat. Much more comfortable and better leg reach than OEM GS.

Kahedo high - More comfortable than the standard (better padding) but too tall for me. I can use it but prefer the lower seat compromise.

For the last 20,000 miles I've been using a Kahedo standard height seat.

I stop with right foot down (UK road camber in my favour). The bike is more stable with one foot on a rest and one on the floor. I only use both feet at low speeds with cold engine but for stability I prefer to keep the leg on outside of a turn on the footrest. If it stalls in a turn the bike WILL go down. Those of longer legs might save it but they risk injury. Be careful on a cold engine.

Its big heavy bike. It will get dropped, so fit crash protection and get used to the protectors looking marked. Some crash bars are worse than useless in a proper crash causing damage to the engine mountain points. IMO the Machine Art head protectors are the best bet. You might be able to add some metal rubbing strips to take the cosmetic hit on those car park tumbles.

Thankfully these bikes crash well at low speed at least.
