Allways thought that the GSA topbox was to high, and as i never carry a helmet in it, i cut it down about 11 cm.

So now it can even be moved forward to the pillon position and work as a makeshift backrest on long trips.

by it self:

test mounted forward in pillon pos:

Real easy job, and in my opinion, looks much better proportioned.

Bike is torn apart for powercommander build, but will post better pic's when i have it back together, to give a better overview with both mounting positions..

Found two more pic's

I did it for a trip to Spain, moves the weight forward and acts as backrest.

Bugs ate all the black stuff off my plate as seen on RH pic :blast

Angle grinder

What did you use to cut it down, dare I ask ?

Yes you may..:)

I started out by grinding the rivets holding the bottom part to the sides, popped them out, loosend the bottom and removed it. there are a silicone like seal between the two parts that need loosening and needs to be refittet later on.
Then marked the cutting line and, carfully cut the now open end to messure with a thin cutter on the angle grinder. Made sure all was straight, and used the cutoff part as a drilling template on the new lower part/lower end, mounted and sealed it all up with silicone, rivveted and bolted it all together, and job was all done. :thumb2

Innovation !

I like it. That's what I like about this site. People aren't afraid to take angle grinders to bits of their bikes !

Well done, that man. End product looks a lot better than the original.

Thanks man, Glad you liked the finished product. Now go on and make one for your self. but use the grinder with a very light hand/soft wrist :ymca or the box will melt. :thumb

For the same reasons (bulky topbox) I fitted the Vario box on the rack of the metal box side panniers.

Vario

That looks very good too, and so do the vario Panniers on the 12ADV. I used a pelicase 1450 as topbox while i was scratching my head over what to do with the ADV box i got with the bike.

I got my new GSA yesterday and I kept the Vario topbox from my old GS, with a view to putting it on my GSA

Any chance of a photo showing detail of fixing of Vario box mounting plate to GSA rack, please, to give me some ideas.

Phil

Outstanding job :thumb2 I always felt the new 12GS top boxes were too large.

Looks fantastic, and as it's been said, very well proportioned.

Thanks TexasMule glad you like it.

I made a short write up for Alex B a few weeks back, and he suggested that i made a more detailed version for general publication, both here and over on ADVRIDER.

So if there is any interest in such a write up, i will se if i can find the time in the nearest future and make the full versin, pic's and all, and post it here.
