If its not locked, its fair game.

I've always been amazed that there aren't the same 'green lane' type roads in Scotland than there are in Wales and England.......:nenau

If you want to stay legal there are a couple of sections of Deer Street near to Jedburgh which are vehicle ROW's and have been GS'd (although they can be a bit challenging in the wet) plus there are a few trails which go up to the border that are legal (but become restricted byways once into England). Another one to look out for is Gifford to Carfraemill in East Lothian - been GS'd by a few on here and still apears to be legal. There are also a few forest drives, one at Loch Awe being the longest. There is an unsurfaced road through Pitmedden forest in Fife / Perth and Kinross. Other than that there are only a few unsurfaced roads.

The reason there aren't many unsurfaced roads in Scotland is that they all got surfaced in the 50's and 60's. Plus it seems that Scottish roads authorities were very diligent on closing any remaining unsurfaced roads (that got by passed etc.) to avoid future maintenance hassles. There were a lot of claimed vehicle ROW's but other than the ones above pretty much all of them were blocked by land owners (locked gates etc) and as the ROW society is a small badly funded charity staffed by hill walkers, the have only pursued non motorised use.

Its quite easy to accidently bypass forest track gates though...

we are very fortunate to have a fair few bits down here in the southwest i ride out from girvan and there are good unmade tracks/roads near here we were out riding today on proper light weight traillies on forest trails near loch doon and passed 2 guys on gs,s gsa1200 n gs1150. anybody fae on here? awe in awe a fine days trail riding nae pics mind:( guid day oot tho:)

As GC said...if it ain't locked....

Loadsa tracks, but invariably estate owned with locked gates to deter ne'er do wells/tourists/plebs like me.

An OS 1:25000 map will highlight any potential rourtes...just smile and wave if you see anyone.:D

I'm in Shetland next week and hoping to get the GS up this track:

..to Saxa Vord.
You can't get any further North than the end of this track at Saxa Vord on Unst. But I need the RAF to have left the gate open....

Get a map and just have a sniff round, I'm sure you'll find something.:thumb2

there is, we just have better access to the countryside in general than south of the border, so no real need for the "advertised" green lanes

But thats not true. There are only a handful of lanes which are legal to ride in Scotland. I have them all listed as supplied by the Scottish Rights of way Society. Wales is Gods country for Green Laning, (well legally anyway).

But thats not true.

it was a general statement based on this little gem

The Land Reform Act Scotland 2003 established a general presumption of access to all land in Scotland, making the existence of rights of way less important in terms of access to land in Scotland. Certain categories of land are excluded from this presumption of open access such as railway land, airfields and private gardens.

I thought all my Christmas's had come at once when they passed this law until I read that it excluded all motorised vehicles and from memory I think that includes access for the disabled to otherwise I would strap my mother in the Ural Sidecar:D:D
