Hi,

I have a R1200GS LC '14 for about 1 month and whenever I drive more than 1 hour start to have pain under the shoulder blades and upper back pain.

In the past had a R1200GS '05, R1200GS '08 and R1200GSA '13, with a total of about 80,000 miles and without any pain or discomfort.

The ergonomics of LC changed? be a problem of posture?

Someone having the same problem?

Thank you for sharing your opinions and experiences.

Ive found the LC riding position suits me even for long journeys - I can ride all day and still be comfortable. However, I've found raising the bars 15mm suited me and was a good investment. Ergonomics are inevitably entirely personal though.

Whilst this is almost certainly down to ergonomics which obviously affect people differently I found just simple back exercises to improve core strength eliminated my back ache whilst riding. I use the resistance bands, very cheap along with exercises taken off the net.

?cheaper than modifying the bike???

I find the LC more comfortable over distance than either my 2005 1200, or my 2010 twin cam. I guess we are just all different shapes and sizes???

I have 5'7", raise the handlebars would not even make the problem worse?

Resistance bands are simply lengths of rubber material of different strength that you use to load specific muscles. I started out with cheap (free) ones from a physio and now use some I bought off Amazon for about £15, google bodylastics, they come with an instruction DVD along with internet access to thousands of exercises.

I too started to suffer a sharp pain between the shoulder blades after an hour or 2 of riding, adding risers helped, as did wearing a kidney belt but never fully got rid of it. Work were offering free Physio appointments so I went along. Basically advancing age with poor posture and core muscle tone was the culprit. 10 mins a day is all it takes, did a couple of long European tours last year with no back ache.

I suspect the change in posture on your new bike coupled with poor muscle tone is to blame. Like I said, cheap fix?

I had a similar problem but I found the pain went away when I remembered to take out the coat hanger from the jacket.

Have you tried adjusting the bars ?. If you don't know this already, if you look closely at the bars nr the clamps you'll see some marks etched on the bars & clamp heads, you can adjust the position of the bars within the said marks without fear of straining any cables /wires etc. Well worth trying imho before splashing out on anything else.

You mean to tell me after all these years, the hanger is supposed to come out when your wearing the thing ?............... FFS, how are you supposed to hang it up when you get to where you want to be ?

This post may not help........................ I'll get me coat.

possibly completely off beam but I had this problem when i switched from an 1150 to a 1200 and it turned out to be because i started to use a rucksck when i switched to the 1200.

also another possible offender may be the 'better' screen on the new 1200. the better wind potection may be causing a vacuum of air behind you that is causing a pressure against your back. This in turn might be causing you to gently resist which over time is causing the pain. Try the screen in a slightly lower position. i ought to say, i haven't read of anyone with an LC having this problem with the screen but you never know. Others have experienced it on other bikes with large screens.

lastly - i would advise against having the seat in the position where the back of the seat is on high and the front is on low. That tends to put presurre on the point in the back you describe.

all of the above may be non-starters but i have a weak point in my back where you describe so i thought i'd pass this on from my experience and the reading I'd done.

Ah yes try putting the riders seat on high at the front, and low at the back. That may help you.:thumb

I am 6'2 and I too had a similar problem. I previously had a R1200GSA 2011 and to get rid of the issue I added some handlebar
risers. Given that it worked before I purchased some Wunderlich risers for my LC. I went for a 300 mile ride on the weekend and my pain is gone. Hope that helps.

Given that the guy is 5' 7" tall, that may not be most helpful advice. :nenau

I'm the same height and also had lower pains when i first got the bike, the pain would kick in after 70 miles i put this down to seat so tried several seats, even had a gel put into the stock but was still the same. I than brought the wunderlich up and back bar risers from NN and that solved the problem couple with the bm low seat its now perfect.
