I'm taking no chances & putting the stainless mesh cover on my oil cooler. The bodywork paint is perfect but the cooler already has lots of paint chips with the previous owner.
The standard bike is bang on for road work and going to Tesco's but if you are intent on some rough gravel or dirt roads, it's wise to put some bits on in my opinion.

I've got a potentiometer guard on mine as well, I'd say it's essential to, as mine was damaged by a fat kid from next door wanting to "sit on your bike mister" He stood on the potentiometer getting off it and cracked the connector ........ lesson learned
Not impressed with the touratwat quality though, I bought a black one, it's only 4 months / 5,000 miles old and the powder coating is dropping off it.
