H7 Bulb/Burner Fitment

Although I am just fitting some of Les Wassall's excellent HIDs, this question relates to fitment of ordinary bulbs as well -
Do both Main and Dipped bulbs/burners go into their housings the same way up, or is one 'lug' up and the other down?

I ask because on my 1200GS (UK spec. 2004):
1. BMW Handbook shows lug recesses for both Main & Dipped, and lugs of the bulbs, at the BOTTOM.
2. The bike's Dipped housing has recess at the TOP.
3. The bike's Main housing has a recess which is a bit ambiguous. The retaining spring hinges at the bottom and the apparent recess is almost matched by a VERY similar one at the top where the retaining spring locates; thus the bulb can be fitted with lug at TOP or BOTTOM.

I seem to recall they are different....

To be honest, the beam pattern is so sh*te it barely makes any difference.

I would be interested to know if the 2006 on models are any better? I recall seeing that the part numbers have changed for the head light unit.

AFAIK it's one up, one down. But then it's been a while as I got les's HID's in aswell

Up to now all the fittings I have done from 04 to 07 bikes it's one up and one down, if it alters I'll post it.
