After months of faffing around with the standard screen, tobinators and a second-hand screen with holes cut in it, I finally tried just riding without a screen and it was a revelation. No noise, no buffeting just the sound of clean air whistling past my helmet and the engine chugging away beneath me. I like the sound of the engine and its the first time I've heard it on this bike!

So thats it, the screen is officially ditched. Tobinators are for sale.

Now what I want is a minimal fairing or cockpit or fly screen or whatever, to ease the wind blast a bit at high speeds and keep the instruments out of the weather.

Can anyone recommend a good quality one?

Bingo - I have always said that the best screen is no screen!.........everything else is always going to be a compromise.......though I always liked the screen on the 1100 and my GSA works pretty good tooooo:augie

Ah yes something like the NN's or ceebaileys ones. The ceebaileys look good plus they are probably still adjustable.

Seen the Wunderlich thing in their catalogue and unsure about the styling. But I would prefer something angular to rounded.

Don't really want to cut down a screen as I am sure I will make a mess of it and I want something that looks really smart. Plus I will keep my screen for re-sale purposes. No, I want something like a cockpit screen or something like that. Black or dark-tint (bike is black).

I had similar thoughts and am now in the process of cutting down a second hand screen.

See this thread for the collective thoughts.

I have some black vinyl laying about here and will probably cover the screen once I have found my optimum level.

Actually I quite like the Troutatech cockpit parts 1 and 2.

Has anyone got a decent photo of the Wunderlich Flowjet?

I put on NN Winglets and a Givi high screen. After 20 minutes arsing about with various settings I can now cruise open-faced up to 60 in relative peace and at 80 to 100 on the Mway with the iPod Audiobook audible through extra-strong earplugs. As standard, the turb and noise is just appaling and the solution I put in was about £140 well spent.

Thanks Andres I might take you up on that but I am unsure about the styling.

I quite like the look of the Troutattack "sports" screen but at £120+ its too expensive to buy and then find out its no better than the original.

Currently thinking the W Flowjet is what I want.

I cut down my OEM screen to use in the summer, and attached the top bit to the top of a Givi screen. I find this achieves for me what I want in protection, low-noise...

Be advised that a cut-down OEM screen is still quite a bit louder than no screen at all, but does keep most of the wind off your chest... And gets rid of the buffeting caused by full length screen. Anything that deflects air upwards will add noise IMHO... but if you are very tall... perhaps not.

I found that putting the leftover bit on top of my Givi, so that I'm just looking over it, gives a nice smooth very quiet ride at motorway speeds. Left a slight gap so that wind can flow on both sides of it creating a jet to flow over my face shield (the source of the buffeting noise).

Wunderlich Ergo Screen R1200GS

Hi I have recently fitted the Ergo screen and its excellent, the original screen is not bad but has its limitations especially at higher riding speeds. This screen has been designed to lean more towards the rider to achieve best possible rider protection. I have also tried the Nippy Norman (tall and wide) and found it to be a poor relative to this, this could be the ultimate screen for high speed, comfortable cruising:
• Reduced load on head, upper body and shoulders.
• 515 mm high (original=365 mm) and much wider at base.
• ScreenSave Vario included for better adjustment.
• Easy to fit and adjust.
• Adjustment as before.
• Equalizes the negative pressure and reduces turbulence and buffeting
• Designed especially with the 1200 GS style in mind, the screen looks like part of the bike.
• Tough and clear fuel resistant Lexan material
• ABE approved.

looks neat - is there less buffeting than the standard screen? I ask because i changed to NN tall and wide and found no noticeable improvement over the standard screen (plus some biking mates think it looks naff so I need to change again!)

Cheers
Jon

No buffeting just wind like you get with a naked bike.

Just enough protection to make motorway cruising comfortable.

I am well pleased with it, but its a bit expensive for what it is - a small bit of ABS plastic not even painted with some metal brackets and screws. And it vibrates quite a lot. Still I guess that's the price of progress :)

I was thinking along the same lines and have been trying to find a "sports" or "flow" screen for my 1150GS. They don't seem to be available anymore. Has anyone a secondhand one or know where to buy one?

Another view on this . I had an 1150 screen left over from my last bike so tried an experiment . Cut it down so about 200mm left and fits perfectly to standard 1200 mounts with about 20mm spacers each side. Made these from wood using standard 50mm hole cutter. Rake it right back over the metal frame and Bobs your Uncle. No more buffeting, enough breeze to keep you cool in the summer, but not anything like as much as naked bike. If you want to fly about at 3 figure speeds all the time its better to put up with the protection of standard screen plus the extra wind noise.
