Halford's classic oil?

How can it "select gears much better" when the gearbox oil is separate from the engine oil??????

Duckhams 20W/50 is not the correct spec for an 1150. Read the threads on the subject!

People do some really mad stuff when it comes to oil. I've never quite figured the mentallity of paying thousands for a bike and then either running it on out-of-spec oil or some Acme Special because it's a few quid cheaper.

The quality of oil, engine; gearbox and rear hub, will have a greater effect on the whole life of a bike than just about anything else. I know that I run my bikes on the best oils I can afford - what others do with their bikes is a matter entirely for themselves.

I'm with Mr Masters on this one. I commute into London on mine so it regularly runs hot and in low gears when the traffic gets too messy to weave through. I change at 3000 miles (engine, gearbox and final drive) costing a grand total of about £120 a year rather than £40. I assume in that count that no-one goes looking for cheap gearbox or final drive oil.

Given how much we tend to spend on bling for the damn bikes I can't see that saving about £20 on oil at each change is worth it.

Buy from Opie Oils (www.opieoils.co.uk) and get a :ukgser discount.

if this is correct, then it is within bmw spec.

personally, i can't understand why people pay so much for fancy oils in the belief it makes their engine last longer. i've yet to see any evidence that using basic oil, as specced by the manufacturer, for road use causes any more wear than more expensive oils :nenau

.
changed to halfords classic (which is Duchams 20/50) and the bike is quieter, selects gears much better and runs so much smoother its like a jap!
just put it in!

That just confirms how dangerous it is to take any notice of anything you read on the internet. :D:D:D

A little knowledge is dangerous. :augie

That link does indeed show Duckhams 20W/50 with a spec of SF - OK for our bikes. The last time I looked at the "Halfords Classic Oil" which is the subject under discussion, it had a spec of something less than SE which is NFG.

I agree that they are better on the heavier oil (mine certainly is), but please stick to the correct API grading.

Do a search people will say so you search and read and end up getting confused.
Basically my oil has gone under sight level after 200 miles and I need to top up so if I use mineral 20/50 oil it will be ok .Right
I hate oil debates

read the manual and put in the spec wat it says, bmw spent thousands workin out the spec of oil and then someone "recomends "a different one cos of the tin colour , or nice pic on it
ie halfords classic, wrong spec, cant take the heat , desighned for an old engine, but pretty tin ??no matter what you say the oilheads are a modern engine, all be it slow revving

BE CALM PROFF:blast, DO NOT FALL INTO THE TRAP OF ANSWERING THIS QUESTION:handbag:thedummy

I know what oil I've used for last 40 years and I'll keep on using it:augie:augie

Ohh FFS..................any decent oil will do in an 1150................

I use halfrauds enhanced mineral.........but will change to semi synth since my steed has passed to 50k mark

and as for gearbox oil ..................change it every year for a decent GL5 fully synth along with the final drive oil.....

there is nothing as good as riding your bike with new oil.......................it is lush.........
