Got myself a garmin zumo 390 (thanks Steve) and looking for the best place to wire it into the system. Undecided on whether to go straight to battery (fused) or have it tapped in to an ignition switched source. If i choose to go the latter route, where is a good place to tap from?

The unit will be removed from bike normally, but im going to get a lockable cradle so that i dont need to disconnect it every time i need to nip in somewhere for a coffee/pee.

Hi Gord. Not sure about wiring but I will be fitting a satnav to my 1100gs, how are you mounting it to your bike ? I have a standard screen fitted.

I've got a 390 on my 1150 Rockster and have it wired from the battery. Advantage is that on internal battery power the 390 is hard to read in bright sunlight, connected to the bikes power and the screens brighter and easier to read. Wired up this way you don't need the ignition on or engine running if you want to type something in.

The garmin came with a mounting kit Rob, its a U bracket that fixes around the handlebar, which has a RAM ball on it, which connects via an adapter arm to another RAM ball on the back of the garmin cradle.

TT thanks for that tip, im concerned that if i forget to turn it off and put the bike away in the garage, that it could drain the battery if wired directly to it.

I tapped off the sidelight in the headlamp unit. Don't need to worry about switching it off when I leave the bike.

I went for the tail light option, mainly because i was doing something else down the back end at the time (ooer missis)

It's easy to pick up a feed from the heated grips. The connector is pretty much right below the fuel filler. Picking up a feed from the lights means you can't use the sat nav unless they're turned on. It's also adding an extra bit of wiring to a 'critical' circuit. 390 is a great choice btw.

This method is good when your GPS battery is low and you need power to plan your route, Just turn the parking lights on ad it powers the GPS.
