Commuting on my '04 1150 RT (yeah, I know this is a GS forum, but bear with me). When pulling away with the engine stone cold, up to about 40mph, I get a rattle/knocking from the engine. Once the engine's warm, no more rattle.

I know these engines are a bit rattly for the first few seconds starting from cold - it's not that noise. I had that on my old 1150GS. This is different, a deeper noise.

I'm using 20/50 oil. Warm idle is set at 1,100, the fast idle lever takes that up a bit to about 1,400 when held up in the full-on (sprung) position, down to about 1,200 when in the mid (detent) position. Bike's done about 15k.

I've done a search on here, lots of threads talking about cam chain noise when hot, but nothing about this sort of thing.

Any ideas? Is it piston slap (heard the phrase, but never in relation to bikes).

Yours in need of thicker ear plugs :(
