I have just had the best day out ever! I spent Saturday roadtesting a new F800GS. Someone described it as an angry wasp which, to me is a fantastic description. I am going to buy one. I've looked at monthly payments but have decided cash will be better for me as I hate being tied to contracts. The sales guy was reluctant to tempt me with extras to get the sale but I'm sure he will have some leeway if pressed.
Has anybody had any extras given as part of the deal, such as a jacket, T shirt, helmet, panniers or even discount? This is my first new vehicle purchase so I'm unsure how far I can push for the best deal. Any advice is much appreciated.

You can get some very good deals on clothing and helmets and stuff......if you push, politely but firmly, you should be able to get them down close to cost price on riding kit, on which there's a pretty good markup.

I got a Streetguard suit at around half price when I got my lebbenfiddy Adv :thumb2

Also try round the different dealers some are better than others when it comes to deals I know lots of guys that will go a couple of hundred miles to get the best deal. I am fairly sure that the dealers will not budge on the list price but some are willing to discount panniers clothing etc., after all the 1200has had free panniers for a while now on new bikes.

A lot depends on supply and demand and F800GS is popular at the moment.
There are some good deals to be had with nearly new I bought mine with 500 miles on the clock for £1000 under list price. You still get the BMW warranty and £1000 to spend on bling!

Good advice! Just been looking and I could pick up a kitted out one for a grand less than a standard new one. I would need to buy a lowered seat but I would still get a lot more bike. Cheers CollinT

Remember that both parties in the deal need to be satisfied, so give and take for both parties is possible, and generally leads to a happier partnership.

Asking for reduced price on a single big price article may not deliver much benefit, but when looking at options / extras / accessories then the dealer may have more leeway. Same is true for other items the dealer has in stock.

By looking at other options rather than reduce price by XXX, then the dealer can balance which items they reduce and can spread the load.

I bought a mountain bike in April. There was about an £80 difference between buying from a shop, and the internet, which whilst I didn't mind paying a local dealer for the ability to look and feel, I couldn't justify the price difference, and how could he (he couldn't). He also couldn't reduce the price of the bike, however when buying accessories (toolkit, punture repair, lights, pump, helmet etc) he could compromise the price of the extras (which I would have bought anyway) to save me around £85. So the deal was done, he could balance his books without upsetting he cycle manufacturer, and I got good service and excellent discount. Both parties were happy with the deal - so it's always worth having an adult conversation, and be prepared to walk away.

When I bought my bike they charged me £100+ more due to a discrepancy on the price of the dealer / BMW motorad site. Got a couple bob off of some hand guards vs the touratwat ones.

I guess it's because I am such a push over, but having worked in retail for > 5 years I know the crap salesman come out with, and I was really disappointed not to get something to sweeten the deal, especially as I have heard people getting panniers thrown in etc.

Is it too late to demand free crap? :P

I got a Touratech stainless rack included on my F650GS for free, would otherwise cost about £200 fitted...

Just ask him straight out - if he's unwilling to drop the price, can he include some extras? Don't expect the earth, but it's worth a try. Be prepared to walk away if he won't play along...

I did get a bit of a deal on the price, but with some very specific conditions:

- I had to take the machine he had in stock - I was dithering about the exact spec I wanted, and this had a bit more than I would have gone for.

- I had to say yes pretty much straight away.

His story, which I have no reason to doubt, was that he had to shift that machine off his floor or put it onto his books, which would cost him. Of course this could have all been salesman technique. I had let him know that I'd been round other dealers looking at other bikes. I don't really care to be honest :)

Certainly didn't expect to get a deal on price. That was my impression of BMW before hand - no haggling , so I was pleasantly surprsined.
