…….has anyone considered the Tread 2 as an alternative to the Zumo XT2. It seems to be identical hardware but with more off road biased software and maps (as far as I can work out)

A good question. I can’t find any UK reviews showing Tread 2 in operation ; all seen to be U.S. It is for sale here though .
