Has the 1200GS lost the GS Plot??

Interesting points (and opinions) about the 12GS, especially the CANBUS system. My early R1200GS doesn't have heated grips as standard (a travesty methinks !!) and I can't fit BMW heated grip components to my bike without telling the ECU to enable them to function. A dealer-fit is about £300. How long before someone reverse-engineers the ECU protocols and writes a program for the home mechanics benefit, in the same way that you can get VAG-COM for a VW ??

Not long at all apparently hence my comment about bush mechanics getting their heads around the "new technology".....

Eh up r go'a

Na then……….If ya do what ya always did, ya get what ya always got!

Johnny, Glass half empty?

1200 owner, glass half full!

I think people are missing out on some aspects of the 1200GS story here, and in seeing only a part of the picture, you've fallen into an understandable trap Johnny.

I'd agree that the standard, off the shelf, alloy wheeled 1200 is a more road orientated bike.......and so would the majority of its owners......and I'd also agree with Johnny that it has lost a bit of 'GS'ness, whatever the fekk that is.....

That was just the first act though.....and from a marketing and strategy point of view, a very very good one......look at the units BWM is shifting, look at what the press has said and look how many riders are coming across to the GS marque from sports bikes etc.......You can't fault BWM for the market/model they've gone for because the results speak for themselves.....

But then comes the second act....the HP2.....an extreme machine, one that will hit the sports papers, the sattelite and cable channels and the specialist press, a machine that at the same time it increases the number of people who will buy Johnny's 1200(not)GS, will also make a whole other sector of motorcyclists lust after it........

Then the third act will come along, which will hopefully have Johnny saying 'ah yes, that's ok, that IS a 'proper' GS, welcome back to the fold.......the 12000GSAdventure.....and those who lusted after the HP2 but thought it impractical, those who have hung on to their 1150's and 1150 Advs and a fair few other GS owners who currently don't like the '1200(non)GS' will jump at it.

The 12GSA had to come last of the three acts.......let's face it, not many apart from the vertically challenged would have bought a standard 1200GS over a 1200GSA if they'd have brought the GSA varient out first.....just like the ADV version of the 1150.

That's my take on it anyway......it's great marketing, very well targeted and it's proving succesful, even if it isn't holding 'true' to whatever a GS 'is' or 'was'.......but the HP2 most certainly is holding to, if not exceeding that 'gs'ness, and I suspect (and hope) that the 1200GSA will be the best ever GS.

I agree with most of your points, Bill

And the marketing strategy is good, but let's hope (as you said) the 1200Adv is good.

However I think (and not everybody else does) that the HP2 looks the absolute business (except the headlight and that's easily fixed with TT coming up with a Rallye headlight fairing)

I Think

I think Mine is the nuts,
Seat isnt that comfy but not worse than my ADV or std 1150 GS
the screen is better (FOR ME)
its sooo much quicker not just on the straights
its lighter so easier to move around

I wonder if opinions would have changed if Ewan and Charlie would have used one on there trip
all the write ups seem to agree that it is by far better, but hey ho
if youve bought one and like it excellent if not sell it, simple really:P

Utterly rediculous a bike costing well over £9000 of your English pounds was released with so many 'teething' problems and yet, so many of you find it 'ok'. More money than sense.

It's only money. You can't take it with you. There comes a point in life where that realisation leads you to decide that if it's fun then you should just do it. My 1200 is the most fun I can have with my clothes on.

And your experience of the 1200GS is? I've had mine for six months with no problems.

I think that it might be a case that you might have more mouth than sense?

'You pay's your (own) money and you takes your choice'

Tricolourwhatever,

'Do the math!' :P :P :P

Hear, Hear, Schtum.

As we say here 'F**K the begrudgers' :D :D

Those of us who are 12gs owners (& no problems - yet!! ) don't give a toss whether the 1100/1150/GSA riders like our bikes or not.

We're as happy as pigs in sh*t & we're off to ride our bikes - goodbye ;)

Ahh..........

'Tricolourferever'

If I remember correctly a (french?) wind up merchant!

I'm not biting.

And when purchased by Punts?

Having sold a VFR last year, I bought a new 12GS in Apr and its the mutt's nuts. How many 1150 Advs actually go off road - most seem to be owned by the biking equivalent of the urban 4x4 brigade. It's undoubtedly road orientated because that's what most of us want. Having just got back from the 'Ring where I was significantly quicker than 2 VFRs and an Aprilia Falco, and even beat a ZX10 (granted, he can't have been that good a rider, despite having been around about 15 times previously) I am utterly smitten by it's everyday ability on everyday roads.
I reckon the 'aggies' are living in the past. Just cause something looks more solid doesn't mean it is - do we really want to return to the bad old days. Mine has been reliable (OK, only 2500 miles so time for anything to happen) and uses hardly any oil thanks to an easy first 600 miles and then giving it increasing welly to bed the pistons in over the next 600. And it handles sooooo...much better than the older GSs.

Most importantly, I'm happy. In fact I'm over the moon. And if those on 1100/1150s are happy then who am I to argue. To be frank, why the monster thread anyway, if not a forum for pointless gibes.

I suspect (and hope) that the 1200GSA will be the best ever GS.

I gather that there are 5 new models due to be launched next year so one has surely got to be the 1200 GSA.

As much as I like the Adv 'look' I've enough trouble getting my feet on the ground as it is without a taller seat thank you.

What, other than this 'look' is a 1200 Adv likely to give?

Bigger tank - I'm presently on 205 miles with no countdown showing, that'll do me.

Heavier - What's the point?

TCK's - I can fit em on the 1200GS

Wire wheels - Ditto

Hoofin big panniers - I don't need em.

Lower 1st gear - yes, that'd be handy.

Humungeous crash bars - ???

I do like the Adventure theme but have no wish to own one. If I were to do my dream trip of a lifetime (Africa) the Adv would be too big and heavy for me.

Airhead maybe or an F650.

Adventure? BIG boys toy?
