Like always trying to do things on the cheap I brought and received to day a Top Box off of the dreaded EBAY.
Great, fair price, quick delivery but...... you knew there had to be a but,and it is the most crucial part where the catch lips into the lid is broken off. Well as you would expect I have contacted the seller and we are I am sure going to have some fine old discussions on this matter. That said however given he must have known it was broken before he sold it to me I will be very surprised if he offers me my money back so it looks as though I will have to try and bodge it up and that is where I need your advice.
The piece that has broken off looks as though it could be glued back on but having tried it with some form of Superglue it never held but given there seems to be so many derivative Superglues about does anyone know of one that might do the job. If it looks as though I cannot do it that way I may have to to fit a clasp and hook thingy. That will look just great though.

Find out what the price for a new one of the broken bits is, then claim you money back through paypal if you used it to make the payment. If you didnt, then tough luck.

As for glue, my dad once told me that the two certainties in life are that girls are trouble and glue dont work...

Sorry to hear of your trouble hondated but like Komatias says if you paid with paypal you shouldn't have a problem getting your money back.

Cheers Tom

you could use a plastic repair kit called "plastex" that works very well, or preferably you could plastic weld it. Its quite easy to do with a bit of practice.

The release agents in the plastic moulding will prevent the cyanacrolite from bonding and the lack of moisture in the materials will also create a poor joint. You could try an activator and filling agent. Its also great for getting high :augie CYANO (superglue) is never great on abs plastic though. And espicially on an area subjected to shock loading (like this instance)

Thanks

Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply. I was pleased to read your comments about Paypal because that is how I paid for it.I will have to wait a little time though because they leave a leeway for the seller to respond to my claims.

If you look at this link you can see the seller has posted a photo showing the catch in tact. Clever move on his part but it just could not have got broken in the post. He is that clever he has marked the box fragile, this way up all over it. Having now looked at his Ebay profile I see he has only just joined as well. Definitelya slippery customer I would say.

Thanks for the advice on the repair as well hopefully I won't need to do it but if I do it will be the first method I try.

Cheers everyone.

Looking at the photo ( and I have a E460 too) the area around the latch on the bottom of the box looks a little battered. I'll post a piccy of mine tonight.

As he's no feedback yet, it might help them sort things out if you mentioned no-one will buy something from someone who has -ve feedback ;)

You did keep the packaging or take photo's of it as for £15 I'd expect them to have insured it. Otherwise that p & p IMO is taking the p1ss.

I don't think a glue repair would hold for more than a couple of seconds as on mine there's certainly some tension on it when closed :(

funnily enough I have a top box on ebay at the moment and using a courier, the cost will be around a tenner, due to the volume of the item which is about the same size as e460....so he is a bit expensive on that unless its insured for more....

I use interparcel and this is what they say about damage in transit
Do I sign for my goods if they are damaged?
If the goods are damaged, please sign to accept but note that the goods are damaged.

If you sign for the goods in 'Good Condition' you will not be able to process a claim.

Do I need to keep the packaging?
If the goods are damaged, packaging must be kept in case the goods need inspecting with the packaging.

If the packaging is not kept this could invalidate your claim.

What cover does my consignment have?
All services come with an inclusive transit cover of £50. Additional transit cover can be added at 2% of the declared value up to £1000 in consignment value.

What do I need to start a claim?
In order to process a claim the following are needed:
*Photograph of the item
*Photograph and description of the packaging
*An invoice showing the value of the consignment

Who can start a claim?
Only the person that placed the order can start a claim and only the person who placed the order will be paid out.

How much time do I have to submit a loss or damage claim?
All claims must be received within 28 days of the date of booking. We will not be able to process claims received after this date.

How long will my claim take?
The industry standard to resolve a claim is 8-12 weeks. Interparcel aim to conclude any claim received within 28 working days.

So the sender seems to be the only one who can claim!!!!:augie
I think your best hope is to do a dispute thru ebay....reject the item as not being as described

good luck

Photo's of my top box. One thing I did note, the latch for the lid is sprund loaded and so when the lid is not there it will rest against the "handle" bit your hand holds, rather than the place where it is when locked. So I reckon it'd be very hard to prove it was ok from the photo's taken and show on ebay.
