HDMI sockets

There are HDMI sockets on the back of my telly. What's the difference between them and scart sockets? Do I use one or the other or both at the same time?

SCART is video level HDMI is data/ HD video some HDMI can carry sound as well

you can use either different bits of kit need different connections, All cool new stuff.... will have HDMI it's the future scart was the future 20 years ago...

Use the HDMI if you can - even if you're not pushing a High Def picture into your TV - you'll get a better picture etc.

One problem I found with HDMI, we got a Virgin HD+ box recently and it developed a fault with its hard disk. A support engineer visited with a replacement box whilst I was out and the replacement HDMI lead provided didn't work with my LG LCD TV (I had sound but no picture) as the pins werent quite long enough to make good contact in the TV (the engineer must have plugged it in without testing it before leaving). By trial end error I found my sons Xbox360 HDMI cable worked a treat. After much complaining from him I bought a new HDMI cable and everyones happy.

Maybe not all HDMI leads are made of equal quality ??

LIKE A LOT OF THINGS THE LONGER YOU LIVE THE MORE YOU LEARN. A REASONABLE QUALITY LEAD WILL WORK BETTER AND LAST LONGER POSSIBLY SAVING YOU PULLING OUT YOUR HAIR GETTING SOMETHING TO WORK .

SCART is analog video + sound
HDMI is digital, essentially DVI + sound

Well, I bought an HDMI lead today, plugged one end into stepdaughter no 2's telly and the other end into the dvd player and the telly showed the right picture at the right time. That'll do.

No sound on HDMI

Connecting my Dell laptop to the TV using an HDMI cable, I've got video but no sound.
By a process of elimination, I've established the laptop is not outputting any audio via the HDMI port.
Any ideas how I turn this on ?
Running W7 home.

HDMI is a digital signal and SCART is an analogue signal totally different and incompatible without converting the signal

Recently switched to HDMI and disappointed that it doesn't work like SCART and automatically switch the input on the TV to the device you have just switched on .
For example our 3 yr old used to be able to put a DVD on all by herself with SCART but now she needs someone to get the TV remote scroll through the INPUTs and select HDMI for her.

Plug the hdmi lead into your laptop and tv.... with laptop off. Start your laptop and all should work now.

turn on telly, THEN turn on HDMI unit decent tv will pick up input automatically. Check TV menu and see if HDMI connection detection is on.

My parents have a tv with god knows how many connectors, just not a SCART.
DVD has a SCART connector and the 'phono' type ones, for audio and video.
I bought a lead off ebay that goes from Phono connectors to a HDMI but the TV is showing as Nothing connected to any HDMI ports.
After reading the above i doubt this would work, HDMI = digital, phono connectors are analogue arent they?

Any suggestions?

Buz - You could just buy them a new DVD player for £30 that will have HDMI, probably the easiest way.

You're probably right, i've spent a tenner on 2 cables already
