Headlamp problem?

am about to change the headlight bulb on 2010 GS. this problem of the reflector coming off the ball seems to be very irritating and time consuming and with my luck would definitely happen to me. is the best advice to remove the headlight assy using the two bolts before replacing the bulb, a case of a bit more work to save a lot more in case it goes wrong ? - is this easy to do or do i have to take half the front end apart to get access? any advice appreciated

If you go down the hole route rather than the bent coathanger, you need to drill through the underneath of the headlamp unit right in the middle (there's silver sticker there) so when you poke a rod through the hole you can intercept and gently bend the white plastic socket into which the headlamp adjuster ball should sit. You can judge exactly where the hole needs to go by looking for the socket that you'll need to push against. Only needs to be a small hole (4mm) and be careful the drill doesn't slip else you'll mash up the insides.

Thats what i did :blast

Thing is i didnt break it, the techy in SBW didi mine being a bit hefty with the headlight on the mot. I was not happy

There should be a sticky at the top of the page
WARNING BE GENTLE CHANGING BULBS

headlight bulb replacement

Was just reading some of the posts there. I done this when my bike (08) GS was about 8 months old, was told by BMW that this was not covered. Not wanting to pay £240 for a new one I just lived with it until I noticed that I was blinding everyone at night.
Happy ending with BM after I had a hissy fit with the service manager and a call to BM, result 1 new headlight. Same shite with my wire wheels that went all manky.....:D

davnjud, bulb replacement is straightforward but as you have read on previous posts be gentle with it if you have to force it your doing something wrong, removal of the headlamp takes a little longer, but you can see and access things easier so are less likely to mess up.

see,i knew it was a shit bike, they cant even get the hole for a bulb correct.....

pfffffttt what next, someone will be telling me the final drives fall apart at random :augie:D

if people are so concerned a bit of sandpaper on the housing solves the problem in a few minutes.

I did the job without taking the headlight out in the end. Couple of goes to get the spring clips right but when you are doing everything ok it doesn't take much pressure and access is acceptable. I have got a couple of flashes with the new philips extreme bulb fitted @£32 so I reckon this must be progress ! - and a lot cheaper than HID
