finally took picture, its got so bad now i've got to replace it as cant see where i am going

I had since switch back to the original halogen bulb after my last post. Today when i start my bike as usual to work. I heard a pop sound and my meter display indicated Error "Lamp!" . As I stop n check what is going out . I was shock to see this. Bulb fused n left a black scotch mark on my headlight manifold.
Anyone encounter this?

the heat damage to the reflector and the bulb blowing are separate events, but could have the same root cause. Any chance you touched the bulb during fitting?

I guess. Went down to the BMW agent n was told the same thing. I saw a few bike having this problem too. Took a picture if it . This is how they fix it.
Any Idea Wat that material in it?

aluminium foil tape. Can't see that passing an MoT here...
as long as the beam pattern comes up ok, i'm sure it will pass.
Why are we going to fix it ourselves? It a clear cut problem of the headlight design happening to our bike. The heat conductive puzzle is the headlite assembly itself. It must be able to transfer the 55W of heat away to a much larger surface area so it can be transferred to the airstream. If the bike is not moving for a long period, more of the headlite assembly's structure will get very very warm. Whether the bike is moving or creeping thru the sweltering Summer heat in gridlocked city traffic, the headlite bulbs should NEVER get so hot that it melts the reflector !!! NEVER.
In other words , so it telling me when come to a traffic stop or hot weather I had to use a switch to turn off my headlight so to prevent for over heat . That really ridiculous !!! A F800GS or F650GS are all adventure bike. It design to go any where!!! How can this happen!!!

Scorched MOT Pass
My 2008 800GS has had HID's fitted from 6 months old and has suffered from a badly scorched dipped beam reflector around 12 months after that.
BUT is has passed 3 MOT's without comment.
You could not look directly into the light with the engine on as its like looking into the sun.
I guess the MOT chaps have decided that common sense rules over rule books?
My 2008 800GS has had HID's fitted from 6 months old and has suffered from a badly scorched dipped beam reflector around 12 months after that.

it's all about beam pattern. a scorch mark is irrelevant unless it affects the beam.
see also: cracked/frosted glass, misting etc.
You're lucky with the dealer replacing the lamp - i think everyone else in the world has had to pay themselves!
That LED module looks interesting. I take it you're going to leave the rear cap off the headlight cluster for the fan to fit / provide airflow?
If you get on with your dealer maybe keep the burnt reflector to experiment on - albeit a lot of the heat goes through the circuitry on the rear those LEDs can get pretty hot...

There's a fan circulating the heat out , my rear cap is on as it rain frequently here. Don't want water to go into the headlight unit. So far the heat is ok not tat scotching hot. I might drill a few hole below it (rear cap) just to give more ventilation.

Murpies , I'm visiting Singapore in 4 weeks. May I ask is it possible to buy one of those bulbs over the counter out there ? ( any other GS'er ...I'd be happy to bring more back if you message me ?)
