Heated grip failure

Greetings

The left heated grip on my 1999 R1150GS has failed. I think the wiring block concerned is one of those on the top of the spine and it looks OK. Well, OK for a 103k, 11 year old thing anyhow :)

Can anyone offer advice for the best way to tell if power is getting near the grip or if I have a wiring failure inside the grip? I'd really like my grips to both work!

Or... you can do like this:

-identify the connectors for the heated grips under the tank;
-measure the electrical resistance of them both ;) and then compare :)

Apply 12V dirrectly from the battery and see if it gets hot. If so, your problem is elsewhere. It might be, since the power consumed by the grips is ~ large and a faulty connector that is also dirty may lead to what you have.

So it could not be the grip that has gone bad, only a connector ;)

A good idea. Next time I'm near the garage (this weekend) I'll give it a go. Thanks.

Not sure how relevent this is for you but I had a problem with my heated grips, I took the switch out of the dash and took the switch apart and it was the sliding contacts in the switch had all gumed up and green, cleaned them up with a bit of wet and dry and some contact cleaner and the worked great now.
 
90% of times it's the L/H grip that fails due to heaving on it putting the bike on the centre stand.

Simple check if you have no electrical meters to test it with - Swop the leads on the plug under the tank and see if failure moves to the opposite grip.
 
Exactly what I did, and exactly what the problem was.

Bought and fit a new grip, though I think you can faff about and try to find the break in the element wire and fix it...
 
It's usually a break that kills one.... you can isolate it and fix it if you can be bovvered. Usually its a break in the grip iteslf or very close by so a grip rebuild is the only way. They seem expensive to replace from new but only until you get toasty hands again on a caaald morn and then all is well:D
 
Ironically, my 'new' 1150 has just exhibited the same issue. That'll be another £56 then...

Then Can Be Repaired...

...At Home By Doing THIS.

Simply find the break in the heating element part way through the process described within the link and solder it to complete the circuit.
I did it in December on the LHS grip with two breaks in the element.

Do use the hairspray to lubricate your new grip when fitting; Motorworks will sell you two RHS grips for about £15.
