is it just me or do the factory fitted heated grips have stupid settings?

just came back from a ride in the storm and about 5 degree cold heavy rain..........I was delighted to hold on to the sun :thumb2
 
You should try the Triumphs!------ position 1 Luke warm
Position 2 luke warm also !

Is this normal? I've had five GS's now. Three are as you describe but the first (2001 1150) and the last (my first 1200, now 5 days old) have settings of off, as good as off, and barely distinguishable from off

I bitched about the first bike - nothing they could do. I was assuming BMW had reverted to old ways. Sounds like some more bitching is in order
 
my 04 plates grips are fine, nice and hot on low setting, and bloody hot on high setting. :thumb
 
grips on my airhead are the same :eek
I put oxford grips on my 1150 excellent range of temperatures to keep hands toasty warm :D
 
For wimps

Handle bar muffs are better than any grips, no more sweaty palms and freezing back of hands, hans sweat and get sore on a long cold ride. Muffs brilliant all warm all the time.
 
i know they are helpfull and all that and this is the first bike iv had that has had heated grips and they are very helpful (wish i had them on my old zephyr when i did 6 hrs in the rain on the way back from Fife a few years back!)but bloody hell them fuckers be hot,

iv been a chef for the last decade or so and am used to picking up ridiculously hot stuff with my bare hands so for me to find things hot means they are fucking hot!

Get some thicker gloves then! :D
 
I find the grips great when the weather is a bit cool, and they are very handy as you can just turn them on / off as desired, setting one seems OK to me most of the time.

By the time I need setting two it is pretty cold and although they keep the inside of my hands warm the outside and finger tips still get cold, especially when commuting where I keep having to use the cold levers.

Just fitted muffs and they are brilliant, anything below 5-6c was a bit cold with my gloves (lined, but not great thick things as I like to feel the controls) and I only put the grips on L1 when getting on the bike leaving work (gloves are cold from being in top box all day) once warmed up I can turn them off completely in temperatures where I would still be suffering with grips on L2.

Grips are perfect for Spring / Autumn and the tops of high Alpine passes, but the depths of winter needs muffs IMO.
 
My old 2005 (16000 mile) 1200gs's grips were fantastic. Pos 1 was perfect for most weather. Pos 2 was too hot.

Now my new (to me, 32000 mile) 2005 1200gs, Pos 1 is luke warm. Pos 2 is between luke warm, and warm.

The only difference between the bikes is the mileage.
 
My view..

IMHO, the two settings are as follows;

position one - maintains whichever temperature your hands happen to be at.

position two - increase the temperature of your hands, even if they feel like they're at 100 degrees C. (the sun analogy seems appropriate).:Motomartin

Flicking between the two on a long run isn't unusual, but it's no inconvenience.

I much prefer lightweight (racing) gloves all year round, and with the heated grips as they are, I can do that. I'm sure that the hand-guards also play their part in helping make winter riding safer.
 
if they ever going to design a new gs I don't see why they couldn't do a seemless regulator and everybody could find their own temperature ....:type
 
Switching between the two heat settings passes the time on long journeys as does scrolling through the computer watching to see when the tyre pressures change.
