Heated Grips

With the weather getting colder and all I turned on my heated grips to the 'full' position ('00 F650GS by the way) and they only heat up to where the 'half' position would normally. Someone has said that the filament in the grips could be past there best...:nenau

Could it be something to do with the alternator though? I've recently changed to a 100/80 watt headlight but I don't think this could have brought me up to maximum power consumption, could it? :nenau

Any thoughts anyone?

On this note, sorry dont mean to hi-jack your thread here but this heated grip stuff is new to me, never had before. Whilst I was coming back Saturday I thought, oh yes I have these, lets try and they did not get as hot as I thought they would. Nicks on his get really hot so much that he has to switch them off. How warm should these things get, I guess too I would have to take into account how thick my gloves are

It sounds like either one of the heating circuits is broken (either the wires or the elements), or the switch is dodgy.

As it seems to affect both grips, I would suspect the switch or the wiring first. If you haven't already got one, get a cheap multimeter from somewhere like Maplin and see what the voltages are on the wires to the switch, on different settings.

It's unlikely to be the alternator, unless the grips and lights compete and the lights dim with the grips on, and it shouldn't make any difference with the lights off.

Mine used to get so hot that I'd have to turn them off, even with thick winter gloves on

Does anyone know what the voltages should read in the two positions?

Thanks for your replies

I've had a look at the 1150 wiring diagrams, because I've seen some references to the grips on 1150s and 650s being the same, but they could still be very different, your mileage may vary.

On the 1150, it looks like there is a switch with 12V coming in via pin 3 on the switch. Unfortunately, the wiring isn't the series/parallel combination that I had heard that it would be, which would make it a sod to measure because both of the connections to the switch are joined together further down the line. Alternatively, if the voltages on pins 1 and 2 are different, you may have found the problem - I'd focus on whatever wire is closest to ground when testing.

I'd help further, but I haven't succeeded in persuading my better half to get a 650GS yet :mmmm

well nick says that his dont come on hot straight away but do get bloody hot so I will give mine another go when I next get it out for a blip.
