I understand the bmw waistcoat retails around £175. Any opinions on this product and any other recomendations. £175 was a bit more than I wanted to pay but if the consensus is that its well worth it then that will swing it for me.

The BWM one works fairly well but TBH if I had the choice again, I wouldn't go for one....the connection to the waistcoat itself is pretty pants, all the ones I've seen tend to lose the insulation sheath there, and it doesn't have sleeves.......I did get mine second hand in top nick, but I'm very glad I didn't spend the full retail on it or i'd be really pissed off with it.

Plus it's a lot more expensive than alternatives from new.

Try a search from the button top of screen......many old threads and opinions that should help .

Thanks Guys
Does the Klan gear plug into the accesory socket or a special lead from the battery?

heated waistcoat

bought a Widder with coller (cheaper with out coller)

with bmw lead plugs straight into accs socket four winters

ago from Riderhouse in Royston top piece of kit

I second the choice of Widder. I've had mine for 18 months and it is superb. Last winter I upgraded it with heated arm chaps. These also contain wires to hook up gloves, but to be honest I've never felt the need for them. Hot legs might be an option one day though.

As for the Aerostich jacket. I brought one back from the USA last year for a fellow UKGSer. I was impressed with the quality but didn't get to try it out in action.

Those Aerostich fleece waistcoats look pretty cool. Bargain too with the exchange rate. Anyone actually got one??

Hi Chaps & Chapesses,

I've had my Widder waistcoat for ten years now and it's still going strong.

When wearing it it's important to wear it close to the skin and I always wear a T shirt underneath it.

I made a mistake in buying one with a collar, I'd suggets go for one without. OK it may keep your neck warm but it prevents you from fully closing the neck fasteners on the outer jacket!

Also I believe they now come with a switch to adjust the heat, however I find if it's cold enough to need the jacket that you don't need to control the the levels.

As with all accessories it depends on how you want to do it mine started out life plugged into the socket but the plug quickly became corroded so its now wired to the battery via an in line fuse.

Gerbing. Brilliant kit (made to measure at no extra cost if required) and an excellent company to do business with (the same level of customer service as Garmin & Autocom, in my experience).

I had a heated waistcoat before going to the Gerbing and I can assure you that, whereas the theory of "your core temperature's high, so you don't need heated sleeves" may be correct, the experience of heat from my neck to my ankles (jacket & trouser liners & heated gloves) in sub zero temperatures is superb.

Always use the kit with a heat controller though - it's easier to control temperature without faffing about turning on an off continually on moderately cold days.

Website

I have no connection with the company other than as a very satisfied customer.

I brought the jacket back for Bob Jeffries. Send him a PM/email

Myself and my girlfriend have both got the Gerbing heated jackets and she's got gloves too. She slept her way round 1200 miles of northern france last week snug as a bug in a rug. Also, 10% off as a UKGS'er sponser.

Echo the Gerbing thoughts above.

Went from a Chilli waistcoat to a Gerbing liner with heated sleeves and collar. Only ever wear a t-shirt underneath now with winter jacket on top. With outside temp of 2 degrees VERY VERY toasty and comfortable.

Best bit of bike kit I have for the winter.

Agree with Mike O on customer service - top stuff

Don't forget to add on the $60 postage fee for anything from Aerostich

Klan plugs into power socket, brilliant!

I use the Chille waistcoat and have been very pleased with it.
It comes with a thermostat control, which is an extra with some other products and a BMW plug can be ordered as an extra.
Which ever make you go for it is a great feeling to be ridding along in freezing temperatures with a warm wrap around you.

I'm a cheapskate... Gots me one from here for € 60, and just made the conversion to run off the BMW outlet instead of penlights. It's still to be field tested, but I fully count on it to survive the Altes Elefanten next weekend...

Look under "Eléctricité, Luminaires - Chauffages, Ventilateurs - Radiateurs & Ventilateurs - p. 2 Gilet éléctrique"

If I don't get there, it's safe to asume that I have suffered from vest-induced spontaneous combustion... :D

Widder waistcoat from Riderhouse www.riderhouse.co.uk has proved to be fine for most things but if you are doing serious low temperature and/or long distance then the full Gerbing is worth considering.

The connectors on both systems are excellent and this is often the weak point of other systems (BMW in particular IMHO)

Widder also do modular arm and leg elements but the Gerbing socks are fantastic!

Had to return my BMW heated jacket today, after it developed a hot spot in the lower back region and melted the fabric. I was quite surprised to see another jacket on the parts managers desk with the same fault, although more developed. Too much of a coincidence for my liking, so I went for an alternative.
IMO, although it performed reasonably untill the fault developed (5 months with little use), the connection at the jacket is poorly designed and the control and cord are too heavy.
