Currently Jupiter and Venus appear as two very bright stars in the South West early evening sky and over the next few days will be closest tomorrow, Monday Dec 1st 2008 when a thin crescent Moon will also be in close proximity.
Then the two planets will drift gradually apart over the following week.
Jupiter is the higher, slightly dimmer one and Venus is the brighter, lower one and will gradually move to the left from night to night. These two objects will be brighter than any of the true stars in the sky.
So have a look; we are not talking star of Bethlem stuff - well I'm not but then again, :augie

Thanks Gerry C

Saw them tonight and I was showing them to the young lad but wasn't sure what they were:confused:. Thanks for the info.:thumb2

Think that must have been what I saw on Friday evening. Wondered what they were as there didn't appear to be any other stars around and they stood out soo much :thumb

You truly are a wise man ;) :D

Mrs C is not with you on that:D
In any event the Irish have a gene that is suspicious of praise - it's why we don't speak well of each other. You ravishing young thing :augie

That made my day, it's a long time from I've been called a ravishing young thing. I'm not suspicious, praise is praise you red haired devil you :angel

I think that the shuttle is due to land today or tomorrow, but on Friday evening about 5:30 pm it passed overhead in close persuit to the international space station, passing SW to E across the sky in about 3minutes. The ISS was incredibly bright.....brighter than Jupiter is right now, spectacular. Every night this coming week there are opportunities to see the ISS ........... more info here
http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/realdata/sightings/cities/skywatch.cgi?country=Ireland for us, and here http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/realdata/sightings/cities/skywatch.cgi?country=United+Kingdom for the UK & Norn Iron. Select your location for details on when and where to look.....:)
